2012: What have you done this week to prepare?

Kickin it off early.

For me, its mostly financial. I have everything else.

Kill debt at every chance...

cowboy1964 12-30-2011 14:55

Me too. Cash on the barrelhead, as they used to say. Rainy days are coming.

bdcochran 12-30-2011 18:01

I realized that the most flashlight usage was in looking in a car at night and that a lot of lumins were needed. So, today, I bought a 420 lumin unit for that function. The examination of the cars was happening a few times a week. Remember, it gets dark early at this time of year and my neighborhood does not have street lights.

I have been trimming a pomegranate tree all week. I estimate that the branches will fill 12 barrels. It was put in about 20 years ago. I have 12 fruit trees in the backyard.

G29Reload 12-30-2011 18:08

Good time to check car preps. Coldest time of year coming.

Car flashlight in the glovebox needs fresh batts.

Throw an extra blanket in the car, deicer and the camp stove portable.

bobby_w 12-30-2011 18:47

Worked on the compost piles.

Picked and put up some collard greens from the garden.

Got rid of some expiring food supplies to the local pantry.

Did some maintenance on my rain water system since we are actually getting some rain now.

Sprayed my peach trees with dormant oil.

Prayed for a good year and some friends who are having a tough holiday with elderly parents health wise, including our own. Tossed you guys in for good measure. Hope you don't mind. :wavey:

thejellster05 12-30-2011 18:49

Also financial, got serious about killing debt as a COUPLE. We killed cable in lew of Netflix/Hulu. Around 70 dollars of savings a month and I honestly don't miss cable at all. (I know this issue has been beat to death in the GNG lounge.)

Happy New Year everybody!

jdavionic 12-30-2011 18:52

For me, it's almost exclusively financial. Next year, my first daughter goes off to college. Two years later, my second daughter goes off to college. Combine these factors with the desire to eliminate all debt and I've got quite a challenging 2012 ahead of me. No change to eliminate all debt, but I'd like to get rid of most of it aside from the house.

farmer-dave 12-30-2011 19:08

Finally ordered some blackout curtains for the house, got the first ones hung tonight. Good for energy efficiency and for looks if running a generator. I also bought a bedroom furniture set for the wife, may not sound like a prep item but I've made the wife wait for about 8 years and it was quickly becoming a matter of my own survival if something didn't get done.

R_W 12-30-2011 19:14

+ whatever on debt elimination.

Bought some food and some ammo on holiday sales.

Got a load of sawdust from the sawmill down the road to add to the compost pile and amend some clay soil.

Researched options for water. I have a pond, but it is a ways from the house and contaminated with animal poo and farm chemical runoff. Trying to way the options for cost vs. reliability to get it to the house.

wtf0ver 12-30-2011 21:56

bought a food dehydrator to save food for later. made my first batch of apples, strawberries and bananas. delicious! now just gotta make sure i don't eat all my preps. haha. also bought some #4 buck for the mossberg

M1A Shooter 12-30-2011 22:17

added a sling to my AR15, didnt have one on this build since i free floated it.

also signed my wife and i up for a concealed carry oriented handgun class locally. its just beyond the basics but will be good to get her carrying finally.

starting this year with a pretty good job after not working for 6 months. very close to home so the drive is 5 minutes, will be biking when its warmer. wife works with me as well now so its a good start to the year.

on track to graduate with my fist BS degree in Electrical Engineering in december of 2012. hopefully the world doesnt melt down. and me either for that matter, i am taking 24 hrs each semester plus 11 this summer to get it over with.

Speaking of Tennessee ladies with CHL...

Say a prayer (or more) for this lady Tennessean with a CHL..

..a nurse & 4th year med student..

..snared by NYC's illegal, unconstitutional & draconian Sullivan Law!! :steamed:

Hopefully this lemon can be made into lemonade..

..and bring NYC (kicking & screaming if need be) into full compliance with the 2nd amendment & Heller!

Fines & jail terms need to be mandated for the NYC bureaucracy who falsely imprisoned this woman for simply exercising her constitutional rights!

A good trend is here...(but should be paid out personally of the politicians/bureaucrats pockets...IMO)

Ordered another firestarter thingamajig that goes on the keyring so I can always have it in the car. Rechecked some preps and will put an emergency blanket in every car... didn't know I missed some. Got a headstrap mounted LED light for those sensitive hands free operations in the dark such as checking the damn breaker box and lighting the pilot and other tasks where it's better to have 2 hands. Grabbed a handful of free keyring LED lights from a vendor and placed them on every keychain I have.

This says it all for me too. Our only debt is the mortgage so we'll be paying it down even faster.

I've been redoing our rotation/inventory list for short/mid term food storage and also one for long term storage items. I downloaded an Excel food storage calculator/spreadsheet and changed it up to also cover items like feed, hay, straw, etc. for our pets and livestock. Much better management tool than my old notepad rotation/inventory lists.

She needs all the help she can get. And she's a med student? :faint:

ancient_serpent 12-31-2011 13:24

Wife and I are getting the last of our bills paid off (except for the house, that's going to take a little while).
Got another VTAC sling for Christmas, going on one of my ARs.

G29Reload 01-01-2012 11:46

Survival act #1 of the New Year:

Stayed in and did not get hit by a drunk driver.

Or be one.

Still got to drink. Light the fireplace.

Mildy hungover in front of football games, toast and coffee. Ah.

Survived? Check. :wavey:

quake 01-01-2012 12:42

Actually "last year", ie christmas; gave one of my sons a micro red-dot for his AK. Also got him & his brother additional magazines & magazine carriers for their respective carbines.

Also for christmas, got my wife's parents a big berkey and got them used to using it. Their well has miscellaneous crud that makes the water, while still potable & safe, just taste nasty if you heat it up for coffee, tea, etc. Now with the berkey (they have no backup power on the well pump), they can use even rain-barrel water if they have a power outage while we're not around to help them.

Also 'last year' I guess (yesterday) - took my 16-year-old niece shooting yesterday, getting her familiar with several more guns; from a single-shot carbine to AR & AK to smith 5906 and even the .454 revolver a little bit. (Same niece started shooting my M1 carbines way back when she was only six or seven. Man, I love that little girl. God help the first little putz that hurts her - her uncle's not as nice as some folks when it comes to protecting females.)

Re-taught my nephew (her brother) how to use his new Christmas watch as a compass today. Showed him before, but he'd forgotten how to do it.

lawman800 01-01-2012 13:14

Not accruing more debt and acquiring more preps are at odds for me right now.

Dairel 01-01-2012 19:56

Would you care to share with us where you got the spreadsheet? Thanks Dairel

RWBlue 01-02-2012 21:03

So far this year.....not much.
Fixed some essential gear.

Will be working on reviewing old goals and setting new goals.

G29Reload 01-02-2012 21:11

Prepare to VOTE. The holiday ends tomorrow with the first business day of the new year, and Iowa pulls the trigger.

We're still working things out here in VA, trying to get the ballot debacle fixed.

arclight610 01-02-2012 21:13

1) Bought a small hand-held solar charger
2) Bought my wife a dedicated SHTF gun, 7 shot Taurus .357 revolver
3) Put away a few lbs of beans

What I want to do:

1) Get our food stockpile back up to at least 3 months. We moved and had to leave our old preps
2) 500 rds for all handguns
3) Take a few weekend trips to the bush to work on real-life outdoor skills
4) Learn how to fillet a fish. My dad always did the filleting when I was a kid; became a teenager and wasn't interested in fishing. Later joined the Marines, no fishing. Now I'm back.
5) Aimpoint for AR-15. I sold a Primary Arms scope to fund my wife's 357.
6) Maybe a little bit more silver? I'm in college now, so money will be tighter.

emt1581 01-02-2012 22:26

Bought a pair of Gamma Plus rifle plates today. I'll buy a Banshee carrier and mag pouches/holster in the next few days.

This year I plan to diversify even more than in past years... that includes taking a vacation to preserve my sanity. Might not seem like much of a prep but after 12 years and a few s*** sammiches....I'm due!
