recoil spring
If the recoil spring is installed on the guide rod backwards, would this cause stove piping?

Possible, if the loose end of your spring is causing the barrel to drag on it. Should be easy enough to flip around. 1 side has the end circular, the other end is open. Open end always goes in the hole, circular end has a seat (the guide rod).
