Can someone identify this?
 

I figured I'd post this here because it's a picture - but I'm really looking to see if anyone can identify this. I live in Southern NH if that helps. I saw this spider this weekend and have never seen this type before. Can anyone tell me what this is?

I took the picture with a Nikon 4300 digital. I'm not camera savvy at all. I just set it to close-range and took the picture.

If you simply want to include the pic in your post as an attachment, and assuming the image is already stored on your computer, go below the reply window to where it says "Attach file". Click "Browse". Browse to where on your computer the image is located. Choose to "open" that file. When you hit reply the attached photo will be there in your post.

If you want the image to actually show up in your post then it will need to be hosted by some outside image hosting service such as ImageShack. The formula for that is then basically the same. Browse to your image, dl it to the host, copy the url complete with image (img) tags.

The official name is Argiope aurantia. That's a beautiful photo, dmobrien2001!

I am not a zoologist, but I have heard them referred to as Banana Spiders.

Everybody always wants to know what kind of spiders these are.

These are "Black & Yellows" or Black and Yellow Garden spiders.

These are the largest species of spider living in the mid south region (where I live). Only the females are black and yellow like this, the males are smaller and don't look like this at all.

They eat insects of all kinds, and their bite is no worse than a bee sting.

SQUISH IT NOW BEFOREI IT ATTACKS!

Figures, the females probably eat the males when they're done doing the you-know-what. ;P

I have one too!
 

My black and yellow garden spider went missing about 2 months ago and I couldn't find her.

I found her this weekend. She'd relocated to the front beds and is missing the two legs on her front left-hand side. I'm thinking a bird is probably to blame.
