Getting more horsepower

In what ways can you get more horsepower from a car?

Dandapani 04-17-2005 20:02

Several

1) More cubes
2) Boost: turbo or supercharger
3) Nitrous
4) Combination of the above 3

You can also tweak exhaust and intake, new chip for FI, but you won't get a big kick.

buy a more powerful car.

Good idea. I forgot that one. It will likely be the cheapest route as well!

The cheapest way is to get a nice motorcycle.

Depends on what your driving and how much you are willing to spend. Like obrien said, blowers are always a favorite for power gains but they are gonna set you back some $. Nitrous is a cheap way to make power but you wont have the constant power of a blower. Engine work, like having the heads bored, will get you some gains too but nothing major like you will see with a power adder. Lets start off by letting us know what are you driving, how much power gain do you want, and how much $ are you willing to spend(short term/long term)?

Or you can do it my way, have a fast car and a fast bike. Its just easier that way.

There are about a thousand ways to get more power from an engine.

The major ones have been mentioned, you can also work to reduce parasitic losses by changing accessory drive pullies, using a lighter flywheel/driveshaft/wheels, etc.

Lightening up a vehicle by removing un-necessary dead weight is a great way to get "free" horsepower.

Getting the car to hook by using the suspension to transfer as much of that power to the ground as you can is another "trick", often overlooked.

It also depends on the car and engine combination. Some cars respond well to modifications, others don't benefit as much.

Seeing that you have a 1977 Cutlass, I'd be happy that the body is still in one piece and that it runs. ;f

The first two things you tinker with are exhaust and intake. Another good bang for the buck is a gear change, it won't produce more power, but it will move out much quicker when you hit the loud pedal.

Glen

Yep, boring the heads will get ya some serious hp gains. Especially if you get turbo rotary pistons, also. Then you'll be in the 9's for sure!;g

Rob1035 04-20-2005 16:21

and headers. LOL

I bored my heads and now I see my pistons going up an down but doesn't run. Should I check my timing. ;P How much are those Turbo Rotary Pistons I need 8 I guess as I want to run 9's I put 165R13 on my car to lower it. With all this new power will I need bigger tires say 195R13 I spent 4000 for the rims and would hate not be able to use them ;f I mean they are awsome, even more than my Chain Link steering wheel and pink dash lights.

honestly, I've heard of people getting great results from an "active port" job, all you need is a 5lb bag of sand.....

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$=more horsepower. That really is all you need to know. Buy a factory crate motor it is the best deal for the money spent.
