While most of us have found that good ammunition stays good almost indefinitely when carefully stored in a cool, dry place, friends in the ammo industry tell me that it's a good rule of thumb to consider the ammo to have a ten-year shelf life.

One practical approach is to treat stockpiled ammo like stockpiled food: use it regularly, first in/first out, and replenish as you go. This way the ammo serves the purpose of building your skill and maintaining it with regular training and practice, as well as giving you the peace of mind of having plenty on hand.
