The origin of that practice lies in the Bad Old Days of web design where people would open foreign links in a frame rather than a new window or tab. This would funnel the traffic through the host website. Never mind that the bandwidth usage was do to the host site hijacking the link to the foreign site. Served 'em right.
Anyway "nobody" does that anymore.
