The Cobras IRS is a great addition for the twisties over the old live axle.
I am a Mitsubishi fan through and through (only sports cars I've ever owned) but for 30-35k, Cobra all the way.
Straight line or a road course.

Cobra's biggest problem is their high roll center...the IRS only forgives so many sins.
As far as V8 powered stuff? I had an 01 Firehawk with the SLP-optioned Bilstein suspension...THAT was a handling car. I showed a C4 Corvette a thing or two in some twisties in the Shenandoah Valley in VA....
As far as whats out there now? If I were spending my $35k on something for twisties, I'd drop it on an STi, and start tweaking the suspension...just a little. Its pretty dang good off the showroom floor.
