Any trusty shellbacks out there?
I went through the "crossing the line" ceremony on the U.S.S. Vancouver LPD-2 in 1983 while serving with A/1/3 on a Westpac. My Dad went through the ceremony in WWII.
Don't know if they even permit such initiations today-- entirely different culture.
Vancouver was a good ship, and her captain a good skipper who had the misfortune of hitting an unchartered reef off the coast of western Australia and tore up both screws. They transferred the embarked Marines to the U.S.S. Denver LPD-9, a real garbage scow in comparison.
Libbo in Fremantle/Perth was sweet, though!
