Beretta does or at least did make a compact 92FS I saw one at the gun show in Lexington this past weekend. But the 228 (only available in 9mm) or 229 is a tad closer in size to the Glock 19/23, Sig also made a P245 which was a .45 in the same size general size as the 229. And they also have the 239 which is smaller still and available in 9mm, .40 and .357, I see those for sale alot. Now you do realize that the SIGs don't have a safety, just a heavier DA pull first shot and and a de-cocker (I know you've said you prefer a safety) so a Beretta compact fits that requirement.

Beretta also made the Centurion (fullsize frame with shorter barrel and slide probably the same size maybe a tad bigger and definately heavier than the G17. You might also want to look at the HK usp compact, I think some variants had a manual safety.
