i'm not sure about the guage but use piano wire.

mountain tribesmen in our country catch wild roosters using a thick rattan rope set on the ground to make a circle about 6 feet in diameter. along the rope, at 6" intervals, are 10"-loops made either of rattan bark or piano wire. each loop has a choke knot that can snare any fowl or small mammal that tries to enter the circle. a trained domestic rooster is tied at the center to bait the wild ones to a fight.
