For me, it was getting engaged. Virginia Tech incident got my attention, then my soon-to-be wife moving out to CA brought it even more to my attention. I got her a rifle to keep under the bed at home, then several times she would call me telling me she didn't want to go out at night. It occurred to me that I'm not always going to be at home, and neither I nor us, especially in the future with a family, should be anything less than prepared. The thing about getting married and being more responsible really spoke loud and clear to me that CCW is an essential part of it as being protector of the spouse (though she'll get hers as soon as she's out of the PRK) and family as well as being a responsible citizen.
