new bee question about IPDA gun selection

I want to start shooting IPDA and a bought a glock 19, and had the grip reduced, then my friend said that will place you in a upper class, is this true? what else will change the class rating? fiber optic sight? 3.5 lb trigger bar? grip tape?? hogue slip on grip?? just wondering if ill have to use a bone stock glock or what. thanks for any info.

1) No, there isn't really an upper or lower class in IDPA.The gun is ineligible for use at a sanctioned match with a grip reduction, though. You can do grip tape, GLOCK socks, and that sort of thing, you can do internal work, but if you change the profile, you're done.

2) Fiber optics are fine as long as they are notch and post type.

3) 3.5 pound connectors are fine. Some replacement triggers are not (GLOCKworx fulcrum and some of Charlie Vaneks fine work, for example) because they make exterior modifications.

By "Upper class" he may have been talking about SSP versus ESP. Bottom line, you can shoot them interchangeably with a stock GLOCK. Other guns have to go ESP due to weight or trigger type, and it does allow a few more modifications than SSP does, but not many.

It ain't like goin' from Production to Open in USPSA, in short.

To get started I sure the guys will steer you in the right way what HKDan says is true you can go to the IDPA website and see the rules on guns and mags holders. Do you have a holster? Mag Holster? Gun belt? I would look at comptac for the first two Kydex type there are others if you don't have one and you should get a good belt someday it just makes it all work better. Do you know anyone shooting IDPA they will help you. I only been shooting this for a few years and found a group of men (most all) are great, the will help ya out. Best of luck

yeah, grip reduction makes that G19 unusable in sanctioned matches.
that sucks.
you CAN however, shoot it in IPSC/USPSA as stated earlier.
similar game, a bit faster, and less rules.

you'll love IDPA and the G19 is great for it as it is ACTUALLY CCWable!!!

just have fun! im sure the local matches wont care what mods you have done.

Unfortunately you have gotten misdirection so far, and although you buddies wording was poor, he was right.

A grip reduction is not allowed in SSP, which is where most Glocks play. But it is definitely allowed in ESP, which is where Glocks with steel guide rods, magazine wells, visible trigger modifications and grip reductions play. Glock drivers do very well in ESP.

So don't give up just yet. Sign up for ESP and have some fun.

I read the rules but am unclear.....what if you do not have a grip redux and just have the grip stippled? I know it's not ssp but can you move to esp or is it a no go?

Same deal, it is a permanent alteration to the receiver and is not allowed in SSP but you can shoot it in ESP.

Have fun with it! I've met some great people in both sports (IDPA and USPSA), and really started seeing the rift between them disappear in the last 3 years (here).

Just remember--safety is your only mission. No Division win is worth hurting or killing someone, right? So go--have fun, take it slow, and don't try to keep up with the Master Class guys in terms of Rate of Fire. Shoot your own pace and concentrate on running a complete stage. That means, great hits and as fast a time as you can get without penalties.

You'll love it!

If you're getting a new toy, might want to look at a G34 or G17. Okay, guys, flame on!

No flame here. Bigger is usually better. I know people who prefer the G17 to the G34 but the longer sight radius is an advantage to most.
I have read people to say they shot better with a G19 but have to consider that it is a case of Man Bites Dog, it is possible but not usual.
