9x25 Dillon Loading Questions...

I just resized a couple brand new Starline 10mm cases for the first time with my 9x25 Dillon dies. There is a little flare and some burrs at the top of the case, and I was wondering if that's normal? It's not flared enough to seat a bullet. After I figured out the expander die I have won't work, I tried seating a 115gr XTP and it split the top of the case open.

10mm Reloading Forum

Also, I have read that most guys use a 9mm expander die to flare the cases. Is there any way to get a 9mm Lee Powder Through Expander Die to flare the cases, or will I need something like the 9mm RCBS expander die? I tried the Lee die, but the expander floats inside the die, and won't expand the case before the shoulder get's pushed too far into the die. Is there an insert I can put in the die to keep the inner piece down?

Or do I need to throw down for a Dillon expander die? I would think that for the price I paid Dillon for the 9x25 dies, an expander would be included.

Well I got the Belling of the cases figured out, but I guess I'll have to call Dillon about the flare on the case mouth after sizing. I loaded up some 90gr XTP's @ 13gr, 13.5gr & 14gr of Blue Dot, which I'm going to test next week (no chrono). If 14gr takes up this much case, I can't wait to see what 15.5gr looks like if I ever get there.

Has anyone had any issues getting the 90gr XTP's to seat straight using the Dillon dies? I had to pull 5 bullets because they kept seating crooked. I belled the cases a little more, which seemed to help, but it's still tricky.

I just loaded up some 115gr XTP's using a RCBS 10mm seating die with a 9mm plug. Most seated straight, but a few seated crooked and bulged out the neck of the case. They bulged the neck bad enough to where the rounds won't drop in all the way into the chamber of my Barrel. Also the RCBS seater plug left a ring around the nose of the XTP's, the Dillon seater die did not.

Is anyone out there?

Paging Dr. Shadow...

Sorry I was out of town for a few days...

I use the RCBS 9mm expander die to set the neck expansion/tension to very good tollerances it will also flair enough to allow cast bullets in the 9x25Dillon cases.

The Dillon Sizer/Case forming die can size the cases too much...by that I mean it will set the shoulder back too far if care is not taken to adjust the die precisely...yes it looks like the case mouth is flaired but it is actully undersized as you have found out. This is why I used my RCBS 9mm die set to do the case mouth work. This has provided very straight case neck, with great neck tension on the bullets to eliminate any set back potential, and aids in the bullet seating also.

I seat my bullets with the Dillon 9x25 seater die and crimp with the Dillon 9x25 taper crimp die...yes some seater plugs will leave a shinny "mark/ring" on the XTP bullets.

I wish you had the Chrony to check you velocity with those loads, please let us know how you make out!

Best regards!

Thanks Shadow. I figured you must have been out of town or something.

I figured out that the RCBS 9mm die itself is big enough to allow the 10mm case to go in all the way, and the 9mm expander works perfectly. Also, I think since the Dillon sizing die undersizes the neck, that little flare may be there to help accept the expander. All my cases look great now.

I also had to adjust the sizing die to set the shoulder correctly, it wasn't as easy as just screwing down the die until it touched the shellholder.

I think I'll go back to the Dillon seating die as well. I just figured I'd try the RCBS seater to see if it helped. I also learned that a little One-Shot case lube helps a lot with the sizing.

I may break down and buy a chrony. I just don't want to spend a bunch of money on options I don't really need. Will the Shooting Chrony F1 Master suit me for the occasional pistol load development?

The F-1 Chrony Master with the remote display, is the one I have, and I made a small switch to plug into the display head to access to data at the push of the button.

I think I got mine for $77 bucks @ MidwayUSA

I just got back from the range. ALL 40rds of 9x25 Dillon that I loaded performed flawlessly, ZERO failures. I have a chrony on the way from Midway, so I don't have any velocity data yet, but all my primers look good so far.

G20SF
LWD G20L slide
LWD 6" 9x25 Dillon Barrel
Wolff Steel Guiderod & 22lb Spring
Starline brass
CCI300 primers
Blue Dot

I loaded (5) 90gr XTP's @:
13.0gr - 13.5gr - 14.0gr -14.5gr -15.0gr

I also loaded (5) 115gr XTP's @:
11.5gr - 12.0gr - 12.5gr

I plan on developing these loads atleast another .5gr each with Blue Dot. I'm also going to develop loads for these 2 bullets with Longshot and maybe 800X since I have it. I'll post up chrono data as soon as I get a chance.

I just figured it out--you want cartridges that make those big balls of flame as in The Shadow's avatar, right?

Has anyone tried a 357SIG powder-thru die for mouth expansion? Seems to me it'd work finely backed out a little.

Nothing gets by you jeffrey...

I have no plans to use my G20L with a 9x25 Dillon conversion barrel for Self Defense. Because of that, I am not concerned with having too much muzzle flash. I have read most of your posts on the infamous muzzle flash, and I have to say I don't get it. I would guess that well over 90% of people use factory ammo for SD, which produces muzzle flash. Both RA45T & RA45TP do out of my G30SF, and most 230gr FMJ's do too. I think most shooters are more concerned about the use of handloads for SD, than the dreaded muzzle flash. Don't get me wrong, I do understand the value of a low flash handload, I just don't see it as the end all-be all of every powder choice for every load.

P.S.
I LOVE MUZZLE FLASH!!!
If I ever have to shoot someone at night with my 9x25 Dillon, I'll put on earplugs and a welding mask. Then I won't even have to hit him, it'll be just like a flash bang...

As far as I know, Dillon uses the same powder through expander die for both the 357sig & 9x25 Dillon. I'm guessing most 9x25 Dillon loaders enjoy making custom ammo, and use single stage presses. The RCBS 9mm expander die works so well, Dillon should make one to complete a 4 die set...

On a side note, I have posted my load data in the 9x25 Dillon sticky. So far, I've got my 90gr XTP's well over 1900fps, and should break 2000fps soon.

The only case gauge I know of is the 9x25 Dillon barrel itself, and it has worked just fine for me so far.

I never said it was--but if one has to make a choice among 2 or more PD loads that are otherwise equally acceptable, factory or personal-custom, I choose the one with lower MF. 'Tis a no-brainer to me.

Does anyone make a max case gauge for the 9 x 25 Dillon? (I called Dillon and suggested they consider making one since it's their cartridge.) Thanks in advance!
