What's the reason for the long pause after the shooting had stopped? Was it to allow backup time to get on scene so the officers could approach safely? I assume that in this situation, the more time which passes also equates to less likelihood of the suspect being in condition to take aggressive action toward the officers?

By pause, do you mean waiting to take the gun and hook him up? Yes, the first choice would be to wait for cover.

Yes, exactly. It seemed like time was on their side in this situation and they took advantage of it to ensure the outcome was successful. It struck me as good thinking rather than rushing in and getting your butt shot off.

After the bad guy ran and fell into the ditch the officer had all night to take cover behind his car and wait for the situation to be more in his control. The bad guy could be playing dead even though he is waiting for the officer to get from behind cover so he can take one last shot at him.

He looked and sounded pretty nervous from the start.

And he kept pacing while the Officer was making his checks.

Officer was sharp and had his wits about him the whole time, it seemed.

Ok, my computer was loading slow and I just got to the shooting part.

That Officer is one cool customer.

Even after the shooting, he is in control and has the presence of mind to give his location to Dispatch and commands to his fellow Officers.

And he's a very good shot, too.

I'm trying to watch the video but it says it's unavailable. Anyone else have this problem?

Vid crashed at first (Adobe-related) but worked after reloading.

Crazy vid, thank goodness no cops were harmed.

Oh snap, good shootin, tex!

As an aside, anyone else get the impression that his dispatcher didn't want anything to do with her job?

Funny you should say that because its a lot like our dispachers. It can be dead at 2 am on a tuesday and it will still take them 2 solid minutes to get some back on NCIC. If they type in the name as we say it, it is returned almost instently and not hard to read. Our dispatch center has about 10 or so 46-50 inch T.V.s on the walls with everything but law enforcemnet related stuff on them, talk about a destraction that will get an officer hurt some day. I would LOVE to know this guy is wanted right now when he is pacing back and forth in front of my car. The officer got to his car and within seconds he got the return on NCIC and knew he was wanted, too late dispatch, try eating less while working.

If a dispatch center is so overworked that they cannot respond to a wants/warrant request right away, they need more people. If the problem is inattention, they need to be fired. I can get an instantaneous response from my MDC, their response should take the same amount of time. The only delay should be in interpreting the return. An out of state return is sometimes a bit hard to decipher, but with the information he provided, there should have been nearly no delay at all.

Oh yeah, good shooting. Bet the officer never carries his flashlight in his strong hand again.

Dispatcher seemed fine to me... kept a steady voice, got officers there that needed to be...

What would you have expected?

Good shoot, end of story.

He didn't. He was an escapee from Federal custody (hence the fight) he got hemmed up on both Federal and State charges. Isn't eligible for release until he is 85.

Good job by the officer involved......I'd would liked to have seen what transpired off camera prior to rounds going off....Sounds like the BG momentarily got the drop on the officer, but he was able to turn the table and take the fight to the BG....

That's what I thought...that it sounded like the BG had the drop on the Deputy. I got the impression that the deputy was trying to negotiate with the BG while at gunpoint. Then the deputy must have done a "quick-draw".

Way to persevere! Although, that three minutes waiting for backup must have seemed like an eternity. It makes me appriciate the quick response times I enjoy that much more.

If I recall correctly, the deputy fell backwards onto the roadway and the BG took the shots and missed. Too close for comfort.

Had to remember where I read it. http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=df4_1308196520
