If you hunt, then which ever gun you use. It's familiar and you have no learning curve. For me, it's a double. It's a gun I've hunted with for decades. I am comfortable with it, I know it like the back of my hand.

I can't go check, because I sold it. Had to downsize due to arthritis in the neck. I now have a semi-auto 20 gauge Ithaca, but always thought the short barrel 12-gauge with 9 rounds was ideal.
I'm thinking it was single slide, but not certain. Very reliable, though. I spent plenty of time at the range, shooting reaction targets with slugs and 00 buckshot. Great fun, and never a hiccup.

There are several decent shotguns that 'can' do HD duty, but, for my $$$, there will always be a Remington 870 on duty.
I've owned a couple Mossberg 500 shotguns.
I had some issues with the one that I depended on. Mossberg repaired it (twice) and the issue remained.
I prefer Remington 870.

My 590SP is double. Can't say its the best because I've not had an ocassion to test the theory, thankfully, but it has been thoroughly reliable.

My wife prefers the 20, I like the 12.
I recently picked up a Mossberg 930 SPX and have been quite pleased with it.

Mossberg 500s haven't had single action rods in decades, and mostly they were on the smaller gauge guns.
This is my 20 gauge from 1999 and it has dual action bars.

Pretty much any of the respected names will work as long as you are comfortable with it and shoot it well... I like Rem 870, Win 1300, and Browning pumps but that is not saying there isn't a truck bed full of other ones that will do the deed... You could just take any ol hunting shotgun, buy an 18.5-20 inch barrel for it and it would pull double duty in fine fashion... Anything from a 20 ga. up will have surplus ability to stop a would-be villian...
I have all the pumps that I need, but just to satisfy my urges the next scattergun purchase I make will probably be a coach gun of some sort... I already have a couple long doubles, but the squaty short barreled one just move and point oh so well...

I recommend this. I also recommend you shop around and get one as cheap as possible...under $200 is totally realistic. People often buy HD shottys and load them up and shoot them once or twice and then it just sits for years...you can pick up nice ones on the Want Ads here or I found a nice 870 for $199 at a pawn shop a couple of years ago.

Apartment/Condo or Single Family home? Hahahahahahahaha
Benelli's are great from what I've seen. If you have the money, the M3 or M4.
I'm acquiring a Saiga Tactical 12. It will have 2 10 round, 1 12 round, and 1 20 round mag. That and an FN Tactical Pump 12 Gauge are coming this week.
Right now, most of my shooting has been with my Mossberg 930SPX. For the money, it's a good gun. I enjoy shooting it more than my pistols. No reliability issues with it. I did wonder why I only held 5 in the mag but everyone helped me trouble shoot that.

Wilson Scattergun. Add me to the 870 list. Not sure that is the best but I am sure it will do the job.

Others mentioned are fine, but if you want the best, Benelli is the way to go.

I would get the Winchester Sx pump HD right now. THey are light and has the rotating bolt to boot which makes it fast and furious.

you didnt mention a price range. all shotguns use the same cartridges, so they all kill baddies the same. No shotgun is more deadly than another. So to answer your question, all shotguns are the best for home defense.
now if you want it have other stuff then thats just personal preference, and the world is your oyster. Decide what you want: pump or auto, then move on to the next feature you like.
Personally I went with a Mossberg 590 and a Saiga 12.
