PDX1 or Gold Dot .40 s$w

I just picked up a Glock 23. This is my first .40 pistol. I hear really good things about gold dot and pdx1. In your opinion is one any better then the other or just go with whats cheaper? I'm looking at 165 grain.

Unless you can find 50 round boxes of PDX1 then save a lot of money and go with the Gold Dots.

Its not your choice of ammo I have issue with, its the idea of choosing self defense ammo based on price. I could understand wanting to save money on range ammo. For SD, I would not choose based on price. Otherwise, might as well trade in that Glock for a Jennings or Bryco or whatever. I'm not saying either brand is better, just don't use price as a basis to choose something you will be using to save your life.

Gold Dot is every bit as good if not better than any other handgun ammo on the market. I wouldn't base my choice solely on price, but there is really no need to buy ultra expensive boutique ammo in 20rd boxes such as Zombie Max, Powerball, and Critical Defense. These are gimmicks for the civilian market. The reason GD, HST, and Ranger come in 50rd boxes is because a lot of LE issue/carry them.

To answer the OP's question, I carry 230gr Gold Dots in my .45s, 165gr Gold Dots in my .40s, and 130gr PDX-1 +P in my .38s. Hard to beat either one, pick whatever your gun shoots best.

I might be wrong on this but I believe the PDX-1 is just the 20rd civilian box of Winchester Ranger-T.

When everything else is equal, price is the deciding factor. And Gold Dot is every bit as good as (and I believe better) than PDX1. Much more street history, for example.

A guy on this forum posted a Gold dot 165 grain ammo test where the round did not expand in the gel. This is the only Gold dot that I have ever seen this with. Why not go with the 180 grain Gold dot? The .40 was designed for 180 grain running at 980 fps. The PDX1's have no street record.

Its has good windshield ballistics - see their website. Also its expansion is excellent.

Thanks for the input everyone. I was wanted the Gold Dots originally but when I bought my gun and I was looking at ammo, the gun salesman was talking about the pdx-1 and I hadn't really heard of it. He was saying the FBI has adopted this round but i know they were using Gold Dots at one time. He said they are both quality round and so began my research.

I chose 165 gr because at the range i seem to shoot the lighter bullet a little more accurately. I normallyprefer heavier bullets. I seen that video of the gold dot that didn't expand.

My preference in my EDC Glock 23 are 165gr PDX1's. However there is a solution to getting PDX'1 very cheap, and that is buying the FBI overrun "Winchester White Box Bonded". I know a lot of people do not like cheaperthandirt, but I really like stocking up on the stuff when it is $16.00 /50 rd box. Compared to $20.00-$25.00 for 20/rd boxes.

The only difference is the PDX1's have a nickel plated finish, the White box is standard brass.

I have had great luck with all ... the Hornady FTX, Gold Dots, and the Ranger. I have them for each of the calibers I use.

I give a slight edge to the Ranger, which of course is the highest priced... but it kicks butt....

All this guys video reviews r great. His test do show that PDX may pick up more denim and prevent the round from expanding. No problems with the GD. I use both but will be going exclusively GD once I shoot the rest of the PDX.

Happens with all brands of hp ammo. It is a design flaw that causes it. Someone put a hole in the front of a bullet. It can catch debris as it passes through.

Street cred counts a lot in my opinion. You get relatively new ammo like PDX1, HST, and some of the Corbon loads.

It takes a while to get data in. In some LE shootings it may take years to get the results released.

I'll say!! Only now are some Fed. HST stories creeping in. LA SWAT says the .45 ACP 230 gr. HST +p is the closest thing they've seen to a veritable 'death ray' so I hear.
