My son will be moving there in the fall.

OK forget about the nightlife

Most likely he will be going to barrios (small towns). Not much problems with peace and order. I think he would have a great time doing his missionary work. Hospitality is great and I hope he loves to eat and explore different kinds of dishes - from goats to the dreaded baluts

I stand corrected. I'll use my host as my excuse. He may have not toured me well.

Yes, but they are not allowed to while they are serving as a missionary. Too much of a distraction and an expense.

Would he be in Iloilo City or the outlying areas? As for the food there, there's lots of fresh seafood and the Iloilo favorite, Batchoy.

Tell him to always bring bottled water. Water in Iloilo City is not that good. Also, tell him to always be aware when going out of the city limits. Some places in Iloilo (and Panay) are still rebel-influenced.

do communist rebels bother civilians? especially missionaries?

Have a norwegian friend who did his forestry thesis in the forests of mindoro
He loved it there, and he suspected some of the people he interacted were rebels

If it can't get you in trouble, it's not an adventure.

Tell your son to stay safe and have him post his questions/concerns, if any, here in BOGs.
