Question about divisions/definitions please...

Can anyone please tell me the differences between "AMATEUR CIVILIAN"
and "AMATEUR COMPETITION" other than the guns allowed in each division?

Amateur Civilian is for stock full sized, compact sized and subcompact sized Glocks.

Amateur Competition is for stock long slide Glocks (G17L, G24, G24C, G34, G35) and factory ported Glocks. In addition, any Amateur Competition Glock may be entered.

So, targets/course of fire are the same...just allowable guns are the diff?

The three outdoor stages are the same for every category. Only variant is the number of shots for Major Subcompact.

Thanks Danny. I was trying to decide on getting a G34 or G35 and it
looked like the only 2 places it was allowed were "AMATEUR &
MASTER COMPETITION" and "MASTER UNLIMITED". I was just
making sure the guns were the only difference in the divisions.
I guess for a beginner it's really not worth the cost to just be able to
use them in those 2 areas.

Your best bet is a G17. You can use it in:

Amateur Civilian
Amateur Competition
Master Stock
Unlimited

The 17 would be the cheapest.
A 26 can be shot in an additional category (subcompact) and the 29 or 30 can be shot in EVERY category; ammo would be more expensive though

My 1st and most used is a Gen 2 G22, but I obtained a G17 a few weeks
back and am working on breaking it in to use as well. The guys at the gun
shop were calling me silly/dumb for not getting the 34 or 35 instead of
the 17.

When I first started GSSF, I bought my G34, thinking that would be the ticket (although it limited me to Am Comp, so I used my G22 for Am Civ). Flash forward to now - I find that the G17 that I traded into seems to shoot better than my G34 (in GSSF and Steel Challenge) and gives me better scores. Call me crazy....

As Danny said, the G17 is one of the best choices for GSSF - shoot it for now and save your pennies to pick up a G34 (or G35) later on.

PS: I still love my G34, so it isn't going anywhere.

Aside from equipment, I believe Master shooters can compete in Comp, but not Civ. So, a beginner will face stiffer competition in Comp.

If you have the time and ammo, one strategy is to sign up for both Civ and Comp using your G17 or G22. At each stage, shoot Comp first to warm up and get the jitters out, then shoot Civ immediately afterwards. You are allowed to shoot 2 classes back to back. I've done this a couple times and ended up with my best scores in Civ every time.

No, no, no! While both masters and amateurs may shoot in competition category, they do not compete against each other. There is a first place award for Masters, who are designated with an * after their name, and a first place for amateurs.

However, in Master Stock and Unlimited, amateurs are competing against the masters.

The 34 is a great gun, but is better for IDPA or USPSA or other shooting competitions.
The 17 is better for GSSF because you can use it in more divisions.

I have both, in GSSF I use the 17 in Am Civ and Competition... just so I'm shooting the same gun twice, and in my mind that gives me more time with that gun and hopefully better scores. Trying to shoot two *different* guns is a little tougher, at least IMO.
