Just want to shoot....

I hope this is the correct forum to ask this question. If not, I do make my apologies at this time but would still appreciate any answers anyone can offer. It's been quite a few years since going to the country to do any kind of shooting so I need some current info. I want to take a trip to the country (in Calif) to shoot my shotgun and my handgun-- just to shoot not to hunt. Of course taking all safety precautions. First of all do I need a hunting license if I'm just going to shoot and if I do what kind of license do I need? Will my shooting disturb others while they hunt or are there places to shoot away from the normal hunting areas? Any suggestions on where I might travel to find such a place. Any info on these subjects would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

You do not need a hunting license to target practice.
You will need permission from someone to use their land for target practice.
With permission, the owner of the land will tell you where you can shoot and when to shoot so that you won't bother anyone hunting.

I'm not familiar with California but I can assure you there is a gun range with at least 100 yard range somewhere relatively close to you. That would be a far better choice for you.

In many places if you go to a secluded spot in the desert/bush/woods you can shoot without harassment. I wouldn't do it in a location where people, hikers or whoever are present. I'd setup with a safe backstop behind the target area. It can be easier to just find a range & pay a fee.

I do some of both. My favorite place to shoot is our own remote camp property. I can let any hair I may have down & not worry about the guy one stall over.

Either way, be a good steward, no glass targets & pick up after yourself.

That link still good?
Just because it is a dumb, easily resolved issue, doesn't mean you should stop doing it.
