I think it was Delta that had a mishap very similar to this, back around 1989, in Pensacola, FL. The empennage broke, but did not actually separate from the fuselage. I knew someone who was on the plane. The passengers had to walk from the runway to the terminal, and I'm not sure if they ever got their luggage back. I don't think the NTSB would let them offload any cargo until the investigation was over.

Talk about a bad flight!;P

Reminds me of the impact when one of my not-so-bright instructors decided to give me an engine failure about 100 feet above a runway on takeoff in a Piper Arrow. I did everything right but we still hit HARD.

Getting a CFI doesn't make you smarter.
My wife's instructor hit a tree on final in a Piper Colt, with her in it, and then got out and soloed her.;P
Tore a hole in the fabric near the tail.

When I found out, my wife about had to hog tie me to keep me from going back and breaking his neck.

That was an Eastern DC9-30, it sat behind a hangar for years...

During my brief stint at PAFB (Plattsburgh Air Force Base, NY) we had a B-47 land hard enough to break its back. The Base CO had the thing on display near the strip for several weeks to kind of remind all of us what air/earth interface was all about.
Nobody did a repeat.

when I was in the Army at Ft. Campbell we had a Huey doing an autorotation hit so hard he broke the airframe and spead the skids apart. oops!;f
