Vacation Plans

Anyone have any good suggestions for vacationing on the coast. Somewhere cooler than Oklahoma in August/September and not to busy. Somewhere like Carolinas, Florida (preferably not the keys), Georgia, Maine, Alaska, Oregon(sp), Washington State or somewhere like that. NOT Texas or Washington. . . We want to get a cabin/cottage on the beach, something with a kitchen so we don't have to eat out every meal and preferably something with a pool. . . Any good ideas would be great!

Thank!

Missy

i personally love the outer banks of north carolina. if i wasn't such a homebody i'd move there in a heartbeat.

we just rented a house over spring break (my hubby, 10 year old and 3 year old) on topsail island, north carolina. it's actually south of the outer banks. the weather was a little cool (this was mid april) but it was so awesome to be right on the beach. there are very few houses on topsail that have pools but you'd find a ton if you look in the actual outerbanks. i've vacationed there twice. we camped (that's how we spent all of our family vacations growing up) in rodanthe. i have a good friend who rents a beachhouse (with pool) every year. i think she stays on duck island.

there's a ton of rental info online. that's how i found our house.

I've looked at stuff on the net but we haven't decided what state to even go to yet so I'm not sure what to look for. . . I'm looking for peoples favorite places to get some ideas. I liked the look of SC too.

There's lots of nice condo rentals on the "Space Coast" in
Florida. Cocoa Beach is 15 minutes from Kennedy Space Center and
about an hour from all the central florida attractions, too!
There's an indoor range in Merritt Island 15 minutes from the beach, there, and an outdoor range about an hour south in Indian River Cty.

Cooler than Oklahoma in Aug/Sept? How about Alaska, or Wisconsin? You could go to the Apostle Islands Nat'l Lakeshore on Superior, or up into Michigan, or into the Boundary Waters area. But I think going south to the seashore is going to be futile for cool weather that time of year. I'd go north for cool, myself.

Good luck!

Vicky, you sound like my kinda gal. I love Superior and Northern Michigan. Beautiful. My mom is from Alpena so, as kids, we drove thru the UP on our way from Montana and North Dakota to visit grandparents. BEAUTIFUL.

Being a very fair-skinned, blue-eyed redhead, the beaches and I don't get along very well, except maybe at night.

Missy (that's my name too ;f ), I don't have a favorite vacation spot at the moment. North Carolina is beautiful tho. I've never been to the shore down there tho. I'd be more inclined to visit mountains than beaches... All that said, Utah is amazingly gorgeous. My folks moved to the Salt Lake City area and the lake is very pretty - and the mountains make quite a picturesque backdrop. However, they're in the midst of a bad drought so the lake is very low from what I hear. Still, it's a pretty place and lots to see and do.

Or how about Tahoe? I've never been but I've heard lots of good things about it.

Hope you find something you enjoy.
Take care,
melissa

oh yeah, tahoe. we went there on our honeymoon and it was GORGEOUS!! we had a house with a hot tub on the deck overlooking the lake. we drove to carson city one day and saw an old mining town, we drove to yosemite another. absolutely amazing!!! i hope to make it back there some day. i really do love the mountains. i guess if had to pick between the ocean and the mountains it would be a very hard choice to make.

No offense to anyone but we don't have any kids and would like to go where there will be none if possible. Kinda like a kid free zone, we get enough of them with my big family. . .

I would suggest you come visit Washington state. It is one of the few with actual wilderness left, from the coastal areas with whale-watching and clamming to the actual forests with trees as far as the eye can see. Plus, we are pro-CCW, and there are lots of gun stores
