Question about discharges
Hey all,
I am non-military, but have a relative that was in until a year ago. He was only two years into his hitch, and was released. (a year ago) He didn't get an honorable, nor dishonorable discharge. What kind of discharge would he have received? And what would warrant such a discharge? I'm sure there are many reasons, but what are the most prominent ones?
Thank you in advance for your replies,
David

He had to have received a DD214, Release from Active Duty.
There is a marking on this form for character of duty
performed, such as Honorable, etc. Please check it.

Specifically the DD 214-4. That will tell you what his discharge is. He has a copy.
Reasons for receipt of anything other than a Honorable Discharge usually include some kind of Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) action that was unfavorable. This can range from adultry, to DUI, to theft, or any other violation.
I have had people try to tell me they received a Less Than Honorable for injury or disability. It seems to be the common excuse. However, I've never found anyone who could prove that (usually they just go away and I never see them again). If he did receive a disability rating that also will be on the 214.

Discharge types
Here's a link to the types of discharges. I have also seen "administrative" discharges for other than honorable condictions.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_discharge
Hope this helps.

The most common discharges I've seen that are not either honorable or dishonarable are: an Other than honorable discharge and more common, a bad conduct discharge. The #1 reason for recieving one of these is violating the military's drug policy.

You can also be discharged for failing 3 or more PT tests. I believe it would be a general (other than honorable) discharge

RE discharges
I have seen a fair amount of uncharacterized discharges in my day. They are not honorable nor unhonorable. Generally when someone gets chaptered out this is what they get. Lot of entry level seperations are uncharacterized.

I work with the guys who issue 2-14's, and there are tons of reasons to get an general discharge. Everything from pregnancy to being a concientious objector. Never assume that someone did something wrong just because they didn't receive an honorable discharge.
