Eagle Rock Training in Charlotte....

Curious to know if anyone has attended any of the training classes offered by Eagle Rock Training over in Matthews. I believe they leverage the Firepower shooting range.

They offer a number of beginner and and advanced shooting classes. I would appreciate any feedback if anyone has some information.

Thx

I am checking them out...and have PM'd back and forth with Steve several times this week...

I like to keep my options open, and don't think I can ever have "too much" training...

I took their Practical/Tactical I handgun course, and it was great; enough material to improve skills, but I didn't have to pay four figures and fly out west to do it...

Rob,

Are you talking about the classes at Firepower or the one just held in Albemarle? I would really like to take a class like those.

Rob,

Thanks for the feedback. Couple of follow-up questions:

1. Did you take both Practical/Tactical courses (I & II)
2. What was your skill level before taking the class?
3. What did you find most valuable about the class? Did you feel you become a better shooter as a result of the training?

They have an Advanced Marksman Clinic and then it appears the next class up would be Practical/Tactical I and then II. Trying to figure out whether I need to take that first or whether I can go right to the Practical/Tactical classes.

Brachialstun - thx for the information about Defensive Concepts. Had never heard of them before. Only had heard about Eagle Rock when it came to advanced shooting classes in the Charlotte area.

Now I just need to find someone who has taken classes from both to give some feedback.

Thx

I only took the P/T I, I was signed up for the P/T II, but they changed the date (I *think* Scott's wife had a baby?) and I haven't seen the reschedule.

My skill level: I've been shooting for a good long while, but only "seriously" for about 2 years, and only about 6 months with IDPA. I'm no master marksmen, but I know the basic fundamentals, even if I can't consistently wrap them all together.

One of the big things they focus on is grip. When I did right using their grip technique, recoil was nill, and my time to return to target was drastically reduced, even with my relatively light recoiling G17. I've used the technique in IDPA since then, and it really works. Another emphasis was on trigger reset, which I've been practicing, so my skills were honed in that regard.

One of the best things about the course was the fact it was really nothing fancy, and almost everything we did could be duplicated for practice, which I think is vitally important. Rob Leatham could show me how to shoot like him, but if I don't know how to practice it, I won't improve.

For the money, the class was fantastic.

I fully intend to try out the Carbine and Shotgun classes offered by NCDC when I can.

Rob,

Thanks for the feedback. Going for my CCW at the end of April. Figure it will be 3 mos before the state finally approves it. During that time figured I might go take the Practical/Tactical I course to refine my skills.

Was assuming the course was outdoors so a May/June timeframe might work.

Just to continue this thread..

I would highly recommend this class to anyone that is in the Charlotte area. I just finished the course this weekend and it was a blast.

If you listen to the instruction and you are willing to try something new, they wont try to change the way you shoot but introduce you to some concepts that will really help.

I always had a problem double tapping and shooting fast and this class really did it for me. By no means in this a marksmanship class, but they will embed proper grip, hand/eye coordination and the fundamentals of shooting 1 second, 1/2 second and 1/4 second shot placement.

I will be taking PT2 as a follow up to this and it was well worth the money..

Just one word of advice, make sure you bring LOTS of water if you plan on taking this during the summer as it gets really HOT inside the range there

Thought I should report back since I started this thread. Also took the Practical Tactical I class this past weekend at Eagle Rock.

Thought the class was excellent. Great instruction and a LOT of shooting. When they talked about shooting 1 sec, 1/2 sec and 1/4 splits I thought there was no way I'd be able to do that.

But once we went over the right grip and more importantly for me, the right trigger control, suddenly 1/4 splits were possible. 8 shots in 2 sec.............WOW. Had never done that before......can't tell you how cool that was. And even better, was hitting within an 8" box.

If you really want to take your skill level WAY up in a short amount of time, take this course. Best investment I've made thus far........that is except for my G19! My confidence level in the ability to defend myself and my family in a self-defense situation went up 100%.

Will be going back for Practical Tactical II in the near future. Outside course shooting while moving..........going to be a blast.

Cheers

Its classes like this (as well as shooting IDPA) that makes me really appreciate the Glock trigger, even in stock form.

Is there any info online about these courses? Calendar, prices, etc?

I'm in Charlotte, and I'd like to expand my ability, and get into a IDPA range somewhere.

Anyone done any more classes with any of the groups mentioned in this thread? If so, got a review? I'm especially interested in the teaching styles of each of the instructors

I took the Defensive Handgun class from Defensive Concepts this past Saturday...

quite pleased...Steve, Paul and Chris know their stuff!!

I'll start a new thread with a write-up later by the weekend (instead of clogging up the Eagle Rock thread)...
