G-17 Was My Choice...

I had to make a road trip last week to attend a funeral.Of all the options I had,I chose my G-17.No need to worry about rust due to weather up in the mountains,good magazine capacity,potent enough caliber,night sights.I was thinking of just pocketing a P-32 but decided on the 17 instead.tom.

I wish I could carry a G17 but am restricted to my G26. The G17 is just perfect for mountain carry since the longer barrel gives quality 9mm rounds just a little more uhmf than the G26 barrel. Another reason I love my G17L especially if I'm not going to worry too much about concealment.

Of course all Glocks are great in 'weather' either up in the mountains or down in the desert.

G17 is a good choice for a road trip. Always carry enough gun for the trip. At minimum I go with the G26.

And, if the G17 is a 3rd or 4th Gen you can throw on a light which can come in very handy!

Yea, duty weapon. I used to be able to carry a G17 and the G26...but a couple of years ago we switched to the SIG229RDAK.

Not a bad gun, but IMHO we already had great issue guns in the G17/19 and the HKUSPC.40LEM.

The 229 is such a big and heavy gun. I so much loved carrying my G17 with the G26 as a back-up/off duty/office duty gun. The 3rd Gen G17 filled all of the issues of a good primary handgun with a light on it, great for patrol, warrant service, escort duty etc.

The 229 is ok but I sure don't like carrying it in plain clothes. Also, I've never been a big fan of the .40...if I need bigger than 9mm (which I rarely do) then I pack a .45 or a .357 Magnum. Lastly, the DAK trigger is ok for me, but I've had a hell of a time teaching it to some folks.

Anyhoo, the G26 gets carried a lot, and I mean alot. Unless I'm involved in an enforcement action, I'm packing the G26...which (unscientifically) comes out to 99.5% of the time.

If I could I would go back to the G17 as a primary handgun in a heartbeat!

I have a good friend who is a police officer somewhere near Raleigh, NC. He told me recently that they have switched from the Glock 22 to the Glock 17. I was kind of surprised to hear that. I have never been able to warm up to the .40 S&W myself though. I wouldn't bet money, but I believe he said that their duty ammo was the Winchester Ranger 127 grain +P+. So I am sure that they are using a very good load. He told me that when he first started working there he was issued a brand new model 22 and when they made the switch he was able to buy his model 22 for a very good price.

Larry,I owned a Glock in .357 Sig and one in .40 S&W.Never again.I'll stick with the G-17.tom.

Hey DT, good to see you're still around!

Shot a combat steel course at work today. Shot it well with the SIG, shot it better with my 26 and then really smoked it with my old 2nd Gen G17. Thought you'd get a kick out of that.

The first Glock I ever shot was in 1988, the original G17. I purchased a G19 in 89 as an off duty gun. I have 2 G19s but I carry the G17 CCW.

New to the forum and bought my first Glock last Fall, first handgun in fact. Glock 22c. Two months later I sold it and bought...the Glock 17, 3rd Gen. Love it. I've picked up a Glock 26 as well, so it would not be lonely.

I also have a 1911.

They all get along very nicely.

UPDATE: Glory Hallelluja!

The Glock 17 is back in my holster at work! Well, not quite yet, still have to qual with it and get it in the books but YES, the G17 is once again authorized and hopefully my G17/G26 combo will take me into retirement!

Time to get rid of that boat anchor and start carrying the Glock that started it all! Yes, I am a happy man tonight.

Hmmm, I suppose many would think the 229 is a superior handgun. However, after several years of experience with that system I am not impressed. The .40 itself does nothing for me and the fact that so many of our shooters do so much better with a 9mm...

I just don't understand your aversion to Glocks, you seem to be very knowledgeable about handguns and your collection is incredible. I have been shooting for all of my life and I have been a fully certified instructor since 91. I continue to train every chance I get and teach on an almost daily basis.

If I thought the M1911 was still a viable weapons system for all to carry I would definitely teach it. However, from my years of experience I know that those that use it well train hard with it, they train a lot and are very dedicated to it.

Most agencies especially the larger agencies just do not have the time nor dedication nor the willingness to spend the time and effort to train with a system like that. When we went to the 229 with its DAK trigger I was dissapointed not so much because I would not be able to carry my G17 but because so many people would not have a choice. Since then the size, trigger, recoil and weight has caused so many problems that eventually the agency agreed with my original sentiment.

So yes, I will celebrate the ability to carry my beloved G17/G26 combo, not only because it is MY favorite carry system, but because so many people will now have a choice, several choices in fact that will fit them better and make training them easier and hopefully make their firearms experience a more positive one.

One more thing on my little rant...I have NEVER experienced more than a few malfunctions with my Glocks and very few with all of the Glocks in service with my agency. My experience with M1911's (and I did carry some for several years and still shoot them for fun) is that they are finnicky, picky, and prone to all sorts of stoppages.

Don't get me wrong,I love the 1911 pistol and always have a few at hand,the G-17 is now and has been for a while my go to pistol.The 17 has higher capacity,less chance for corrosion,less chance of me crying if damaged,well you get the message.tom.

I also carry the Sig 229 .40 with the Glock 26 as a backup/off-duty. Just found out today we'll be allowed the G17 in lieu of the 229. I like the Sig too, but prefer the Glock, Sigs heavy and a little higher maintenence.
