.40 S&W reloads
Hi this is my first post. So please bear with me. I'm getting ready to reload some .40 S&W for my Glock 22 I will be using 165 gr. FMJ and not sure what power works best. I would like to use WIN 231, HP38 or WSP any sugestions for a good starting load, and Max load. I will be using them for plinking, and IDPA style shooting. Any help?? Thanks

Welcome to the site. I'm new to reloading but I would get some reloading books. Midway is the cheapest. Might want to check this out:

we all have been in a mean mood all week. try WIN 231, HP38 or WSF or power pistol.
W-231 From 4.6 grains to 6.3 grains
WSF From 5.5 grains to 7.2 grains
Power Pistol From 6.3 grains to 7.8 grains

Another fan here of WSF. It's about the most accurate powder I have used in my 40s. Also, being a med burn rate, will likely keep you from getting into pressreu troubles.

Thanks, this is what I wanted to know. WSF with a slower burn rate, and less pressure. I was using 231 and HP-38 in my snubby cause of the faster burn rate. I will be getting the rest of my supplies this weekend.

Nothing wrong with win 231. It excels in the 40 with low velocity target loads.

Great information. I think with the everyones inputs. The best thing for me to do is make up several load with each power, and see what works the best. I just ordered 1000 165gr. FMJ's they should be here nest week. and next weekend I'll work up some loads, and see what works. I'll make another post with my results. Thanks Every one.

I did some reloading for about a year or so in 1993/1994. Back then, the net was not a place you could access the wealth of information that is here today. I've been reading a lot as I re-enter the reloading world, and it sounds like 231 is one of the more popular 40 S&W powders. However, I too chose to go with the slower WSF to keep the pressure down.

For minor loads, W231 is fine. For major loads, you have to push it harder than I am willing to. WSF will get you there safely.
