I was at Cabelas yesterday getting some ammo and I noticed they had some boxes of Buffalo Bore 40+p. Has anyone used this? I have to admit I did not realize there was such a thing as +p ammo for the 40?

There is no such thing as a .40 S&W +P, it's a marketing ploy. Georgia Arms does the same thing, they offer a .40 +P. If, in fact, it is loaded over pressure, then I would be very very wary of using it. The .40 can easily achieve 1300+ fps with a 155gr out of a 4" barrel without going over pressure, so why it's pushed as ".40 +P" is unknown.

Buffalo Bore also doesn't list what barrel length they got that velocity with.

Compare the BB velocities with Double Tap's. With the 155 gr .40 BB is claiming 25 fps more than DT. But DT lists their velocity from a 4" barreled G23.

The problem with the +P designation is that it really only has meaning if the company using it is a SAAMI member.

.40 is maxed out to begin with, so if it is in fact a +P, you shouldn't use it.

Not so sure about the .40 "easily achieving" 1300fps+ out of a 4" barrel with a 155gr bullet. DT lists their 155gr at 1,275fps out of a G23, and their claims are usually above what shooters chrono with their ammunition. Not that I don't believe the .40 can push bullets at that velocity, but that sounds a bit exaggerated. The 155gr bullet out of a 3.78" barreled G29 is rated at 1,405fps, but the actual test results I've seen posted averaged them around 1,350-1,360. I cannot cite any of them since they're all scattered around random forums, but 1300fps+ sounds a bit over the top, especially if it's within SAAMI specs.

They probally use the +P as a warning not to use it in unsupported chambers. I have found that the Speer Lawman is about as hot as I care to go in my Glock 22.

I would be interested to see the pressure rating for that stuff. Most .40 S&W is rated at or near 35,000 psi. +P ammunition is usually denoted as such only in older calibers such as .38 Special, 9mm., .45ACP. The reason being that many of the older firearms chambered in these calibers are not safe to use with the new, higher pressure ammo. The firearms chambered for modern calibers such as .40S&W, 10mm., 357SIG and so on are built to handle today's higher pressure ammunition and the +P rating is not necessary.

.40 S+W came out in 1990.

We should see a true SAAMI approved .40 S+W +P load sometime around the year 2080.

I doubt I'll be alive to see it.
