Dennis Hopper Accused in Divorce of Being an Abusive Gun Nut by his Wife

As some of you may already be aware, the famous actor Dennis Hopper is currently dying of cancer, and is in the process of divorcing his young gold-digging wife. His estate only leaves a third of his wealth to her, and he wants to leave the rest to his children from an earlier marriage. He is apparently divorcing her in order to make it more difficult for her to legally challenge his estate.

His wife, though, is contesting the divorce, and says that Hopper's children are behind him asking for it.

In court documents she has portrayed Hopper as being extremely irresponsible with guns, keeping both a loaded pistol and shotgun inside their home. And she has now come forward to accuse him of abusing her many times by threatening to shoot her with these guns.

Do you think that Dennis Hopper could really be some kind of dangerous nut who threatens people with guns?

Here is a news story all about these allegations from his wife:

http://www.thedailybeast.com/blogs-a...astoriginalsC1

Her request for living expenses is an interesting document to view on that web page. She says that she needs a minimum of $65,000 a month to live on.

Why do so many divorces end up being so very ugly, like this one??

Here is an old photo of the now divorcing couple in happier times:

So they have been married for 14 years? Mr. Hopper was forced into the marriage with the so called "gold digging" wife? He didnt know what he was doing when he made his Will out? Now that he is dying and probably not exactly at the top of his cognitive game he wants to divorce her? Something is fishy here and I would not be so quick to blame the wife in this case.

PS divorce is never pleasant. Sometimes it can be tolerable, but it is never pleasant.

Well, if he was making any changes to his estate, I would agree with you that would sound fishy. For people do try to influence the dying to change their will at the last moment. And to me, that is very wrong to do.

But in the case of Dennis Hopper, he is not making any changes to his estate. She still gets one third of it. Apparently it is easier for a wife to legally challenge an estate, than it is for an ex-wife. So this has been portrayed in the press as being an attempt by him to protect his estate, and make sure that its terms are honored, and are not overruled.

The whole thing is weird. 14 years and suddenly he decides to divorce as he's dying? Why isn't she at his side? How can his kids cut her out of his sphere of influence? Did they drag her from his bedside? We're they broken up before he got ill? And most importantly, where's the love???

Sad, just sad.

OF COURSE she's saying that now. Gotta play the 'Gun Nut Card'. Anything she can do to discredit him.

Mr. Hopper: I would be willing to accept the generous donation of your gun collection and will make sure your soon-to-be ex-wife will never get them. Thank you.

My dad back when he was a young deputy town marshal, met the actor Dennis Hopper on the set of the movie "Hoosiers" when it was filmed in our town back in 1986. Nice fellow. As was Gene Hackman.

Dennis is a good dude.

By themselves those actions do not make one irresponsible, especially given the fact that they had no small children in the home that might have had access to them while unsupervised.

What would be the point of keeping an unloaded gun in the home?

She's young enough to be one of his kids ... does that count ?? I'm amazed that these guys (and gals, for that matter) don't sign pre-nups. I'm sure she loves you for who you are and all, but hey, that was 14 years ago. I'm going to send word to Dennis, through my attorney, that I'd gladly settle for 25,000 a month and he can do what he wants with his guns. Since I'm only asking for 25g's, I would like to think he let me keep the guns.

It's HIS will. He can change it at any time. What's the problem? She is not entitled to anything other than what he wants her to have.

I don't see how she can contest anything. It is California though, the land of the crazies.

This kind of stuff goes on all over the country. California doesnt have a monopoly on rough divorces or bad decision making. Anyone can contest a Will. It will eventually be up to a Judge to settle this dispute. By the way he didn't actually change his Will as was pointed out by Lance, he is divorcing his wife so it will be harder for her to contest the Will already in existence. If a Judge finds Mr. Hopper to be incompetent to make informed decisions or enter into contracts given his present condition based on testimony from professionals, then that could also have an impact on the divorce settlement.

I have a hundred-year-old shotgun that I'm planning on putting on the wall as a decoration. That's about all I can come up with. But, if it was the only gun I had, it wouldn't be on the wall and it wouldn't be unloaded.

Some states are passing safe storage laws , which pretty much require the gun to be unloaded IIRC. i thought CA was one of them.

I lived in kal till '05 and I don't remember anything about having to keep my guns unloaded. And the only time you had to keep your guns locked up is if there were children in the house.
