I already own this gun. I'm begining to teach my 10 year old how to properly handle and respect a gun. I figured a .22LR is a good caliber to learn on (many of us did) and one that just looks cool would be a bonus. Now, we've got the 4 basic rules memorized and respected. We shot open sites at 17 and 25 yards (he did incredible BTW).
Now, I bought a used Bushnell scope and mounted it to teach scoped shooting. It was a used 'Stalker' 3X9 which I can't find much info on, but it works just fine.
Here's the first question (sorry for the lengthy setup), at what range should I be working with him on with this platform? 25yrds? 50yrds? 100 yrds? What's a realistic target training range for this rifle with a 3X9? Not knowing the ballistics characteristics yet (thought I'd ask more knowledgable people here) what's the drop as I move out? I'm generally shooting CCI mini-mags or the WalMart Federal Bulk Packs (super cheap).
The range officer told me at 100 yrds I can expect 8" of drop? Really? And I shouldn't shoot at that range....Hmmm....
Second question, next I'm moving to a red dot to try that out. I don't want to drop major coin on a tactical red dot for this .22. Any recommendations on a decent red dot in the $100-$150 range?

In teaching your 10 year old I would start by sighting in at 25 yards and consider 50 yards long range. Once your son masters the shorter ranges going longer won't be a problem. 100 yards with a .22 can be challenging and frustrating for the young fellow if you start there, even with a scope.

I have a Firefield 5mW green laser on mine that I purchased from Sportsmansguide.com for under $80.00. I think you can see the green dot better than the red in daylight.

IMO, worth exactly what you paid I'd keep it between 25 and 75 yards. With regular high velocity ammo, you can sight in at 25, be just a tad high at 50 and dead on again at 75.

I use a Primary Arms M4 Red Dot on mine. Very affordable, good quality and co-witnesses with the irons.

The youngsters shoot my 22 rifles out to about 50 yards using scopes and Red Dot sights.



I have 25-30 Red Dot sights on everything from 22 pistols to 12 ga shotguns.
Most are this cheap BSA sight. I should receive two more tomorrow.
Now I'm not going to say this sight compares in any way to a high dollar Aimpoint. But the targets from the BSA and my Aimpoints are about identical.

Red Dot? Primary Arms M3 clone or M4. Low cost, great quality.
Distance for .22? Depends on what you want to shoot. If your plinking with your son, like I do, we zero at 50 yards (he is using the Ruger SR 22 with the red dot, I use a Ruger 10/22 with a simple 4 x 32 fixed).

It's fun to see the cans jump or ballons pop...25-50 yards is good..can always move out further as he (I) progresses.

We sight in at 50 yards with my 11 yr old with the 15-22. I also put a cheaper reflex sight on such as the following.
