Anybody have any recommendations for a .308 Bolt Action Rifle? Something around 500 or less, if that is possible. The one I am currently looking at is the Remington 700, but I would like to have more options.

Yes, it was the wrong forum, but to answer the question... Remington is your best choice IMHO. Even a cheap 700 can be turned into a well tuned rifle a little at a time. Stocks, barrels, parts, etc. are plentiful and priced competitively. They are the chevy small block of the rifle world. There is a reason we use the 700 action for a basis for all of our sniper weapons.

Savage is about the best deal for accuracy out of the box.

I'll go against the Remington tide and highly recommend a Savage.

Not only do they seem to be (on average) if not at least as accurate as a Remington out of the box, they seem to be more accurate.

There is more available aftermarket gear for a Remington, but I really can't find anything lacking in the Savage support.

The best part of a Savage is the ease of swapping out barrels that an owner can do at home. Factory barrels from both companies are the cheapest barrels they can possibly get and sell to a customer and get away from it. So a good custom barrels can shrink groups dramatically.

With the Remington you have to send it off to a very good rifle smith to get it correctly mated to a Remington action.

With a Savage a person can do it at home with a vice, a barrel wrench, and chamber gauges. This will save you hundreds of dollars. Plus you can switch calibers very easily.

You can do a used Remington700. The older ones are better. I find it funny that my grandfathers "sporter" medium weight BDL outshot a factory new heavy barrel.

Or you can do an almost new Savage with the AccuTrigger. The current ones are very nice right out of the box.

my next one is going to be a Remington 700 SPS Tactical. new one at my shop for right at 600. id save a bit more and get a quality rifle.

if not id try to get a Savage 10fp

depends on what you want really. if you want the tactical bug, get a heavy barreled remington but its going to cost more than 500. if you just want a decently accurate bolt action gun, look at a mossberg atr series rifle. i had one in 30-06 that i paid right at 200 for new at walmart. put a 70 dollar bushnell scope on it and had a pretty decent deer rifle.

Savage 110P in your price range. Mossberg AT100 is also a good choice.

I love my Savage 10FP. Great rifle and it was accurate right out of the box.
