Likely a silly noob question re: buffer tubes

Hello.

For reliable functioning, does the length of the tube matter? That is, can a carbine gas system function with a rifle tube, and vice versa?

In general yes, it depends on the size of the gas port under the gas block and the loads being used and also the buffer weight , it seems like most barrels are overgassed these days in order to work with some of the cheap ammo out there.
