Okay Mas,
We're ready to order body armor as part of our home defense plan.
What level? I'm thinking 2A.
Surplus, used okay? If so, please advise of reliable source.
Any help you can provide will be appreciated. Also, I'm getting another 223 instead of the 308 for HD, on your yoyr good advice.

Mike, the IIa vest is at its best when all-day comfort and concealment is a key need. In a rarely-worn home defense vest, I'd ratchet up to Level II or Level IIIa.

Surplus yes, if it's brand new; Used, no, unless you know you're buying it from a totally trustworthy person who knows how to take care of soft body armor. So many things can damage soft aramids (having it dry-cleaned with anything but perclorethylene, for example) that it's probably just not worth the risk to buy a second-hand ballistic vest.
