Here is an excellent site for keeping track f software that updates regularly to post new versions. it is a mix of freeware and shareware but each is clearly identified.

http://lists.thedatalist.com/

If you are into freeware portable apps. these are the two best sites.

http://portableapps.com/

http://www.portablefreeware.com/?p=1

DiskInternals has some great freeware ( it's at the bottom of the page.)

http://www.diskinternals.com/download.shtml

And here is a freeware site I found the other day that is pretty good. it includes reviews of different freeware.

Great thread!

For you iPod owners:

http://www.getsharepod.com
This handy program will backup all of your media FROM the iPod TO the (windows) computer. Check out the website, you can find all the directions on there. Works great, for a windows computer I wouldn't use anything else to get the stuff back off my iPod. Installed and working, current version, on my windows pc.

For Mac users:
http://www.podtomac.com/
Same thing as sharepod, but for a macintosh computer. Must have iTunes installed for it to work. Installed and working, current version, on my macbook.

podtomac also has a windows version of the program, but i've never used it before so can't speak to it's worth. The mac version of the program is exceptional, however, and I highly recommend it.

One thing, neither of these programs were able to back up apps from my iPod touch, though I didn't look too deeply. Never tried to back up pictures or any other type of data, I can only attest it's worth for recovering music and movies.

Most people think that once it's on the iPod you can't get it back, so have fun with this. By attesting to the current versions, I mean as of the date of this posting.

How about XBMC for those looking to stream media over a home network.

I just found this and it's awesome (Mac OSX only).

http://lifehacker.com/5508611/

The software is called CloudApp. It allows you to quickly and easily share files. You drag and drop the file you want to share into the cloud, it uploads it, then it creates a link to the file to send to your friends.

Extremely useful. Enjoy.

Here I just thought I was making a helpful list for people with the side benefit of gaining new programs for myself, but apparently I'm being quizzed or something.
The origin of that practice lies in the Bad Old Days of web design where people would open foreign links in a frame rather than a new window or tab. This would funnel the traffic through the host website. Never mind that the bandwidth usage was do to the host site hijacking the link to the foreign site. Served 'em right.
Anyway "nobody" does that anymore.

DVD Span. Very useful when backing up customer data to DVD's. It automatically figures out how to place a large amount of data on multiple DVD's either for efficiency or it will also retain the exact directory structure.

http://hcidesign.com/dvdspan/

Another favorite is Cyber-D's auto delete. I use it to automatically purge my Acronis backup images so I don't have to do it myself. It doesn't run as a service but easy enough to add as a Windows scheduled task

I lost my audio on my system. Could you or anyone let me know what site I could go to in order to download a free audio program? I hate it. I can't read lips!

What do you mean you lost your audio? You hear no sounds at all? That sounds more like a hardware issue (possibly driver related) than a need for a freeware application.

Start a thread detailing your problem....

Don't worry. I'll figure it out myself. I'm too busy killing bambi at the moment to worry anyway. Thanks.

Well, I'd say if you haven't had sound for almost 2mo, it's probably not that big of a deal to you...

Good luck on the hunting.

It is and it isn't. I have an iPhone. It just takes time to load the videos etc...

I did get a 10 pt. buck and he will be not only tasty but make a great gun rack along side my 8 pt. from last year! LOL I am going out with my crossbow this Sunday. There is an elusive buck that all the guys are talking about. I aim to eat him!

After hunting season I will figure out the audio software problem. We won't even be putting our hardwood flooring down until the season's over. IF you are so inclined to give me any help as far as what is the best software program let me know. I really would appreciate it.

I will have to post pics on the appropriate thread of my latest buck. He was on the sneak.

All these free softwares are great and I used to have them, but lately, I don't have any use for them. Oh and if you guys want a free MS Office like applications, try Open Office! Very nice.

http://portableapps.com/

Here is one of the many "portable" apps sites - concentrating standalone software that is designed to run from the likes of a thumb drive. (though they run fine on actual computers too)

Some really good windows softwares, things like Gimp (photoshop alternative) explorer++ and notepad++, as well as quite a few other gems all designed to run from your memory key.

I've lately taken to this kind of stuff and figured i'd share. There are quite a few sites out there that deal in this kind of stuff, but this one is the arguable first and best - seems like the best place to get anyone started.

In most cases there are both 32 and 64 and XP/7 versions of the software - but they are all small and it benefits to keep the variance on the thumb drive so you can pick up where you left off no matter what terminal you hit.

Check it out - you'd be surprised what kind of versatility you can carry on a tiny little flash drive.

I'm not sure if all of the software in this list is free, but being the new year I figured I would share:

AddictiveTips 150 Best Windows Applications Of Year 2011

Mobile (iOS and Android) Full List of 2011 Best App Ever Award Nominees - Very big list, but a good way to find some nice apps.

The Open source stuff I use most often I don't see listed

PuTTY
http://www.putty.org/
This is the best up for terminal sessions. Does SSH telnet and serial connections. allows logging etc.

Notepad++
http://notepad-plus-plus.org/
Super powerful plain text editor. Awesome if you do programing/html editing from scratch. allows you to open current doc in a number of programs. A handy thing when writing a java script and you want to test it. I use in place of notepad on my windows machines.

fileZilla
http://filezilla-project.org/
For all your FTP needs

Drop Box
https://www.dropbox.com/
Cloud drive

Also cant beleive no one mention VLC media Player
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html
Super easy and simple comes with almost any Codec you'd ever need and plays almost every file type known to man.

Edit: Almost forgot Portable apps

http://portableapps.com/download

PortableApps.com lets you carry all your favorite apps on a portable device or cloud drive and use them on any PC. Now you can have your own browser with all your bookmarks and extensions, your full office suite, your photo editor, your whole music collection, your favorite games, your development tools and more. You can have everything you need for work and play with you on every PC you use. At work, at home, at school, visiting family and friends, even while traveling. And all your bookmarks, emails, personal files and settings stay right on your drive, too. Now, every PC becomes your PC.
