I have read much about the "7 yard" rule for CCW handgun proficiency. However, my question is - in your experience/investigation over many years - what actual engagement ranges do you believe are the most common? Perhaps this depends on whether the CCW-carrier is the intended target of a potential assailant, or is in the vicinity of another intended target (such as being in line at a bank when armed BGs attempt a bank robbery).
Also, do you have any feel for engagement ranges when a back-up Gun is used by a CCW holder? The reason I ask this is I am considering a small back-up Gun that is cheap and I don't shoot well at longer ranges but can be accurate with fast shots inside of 3-4 yards.
"Close is common," and more so with backup guns, which tend to often be employed when you're at contact distance with an opponent who just got hold of your primary weapon.
Beyond that, it's speculative, because there is no emprical database of armed citizen shootings in terms of distance, number of shots fired, etc.

Based on your response, I'm thinking bigger/more powerful for BUG makes a lot of sense, especially if the distance is short. One that looks good to me is Glock 36 slimline .45 ACP.
