Traffic stop question

Here in Michigan we have to inform the officer when we're stopped that we have a CPL and whether or not we're armed. (or at least that's my understanding)
Last week my wife and I were driving back from Florida on I-75 and she was stopped driving my truck, the FHP trooper made a passenger side approach and it dawned on me I had no idea if
a: I had a duty to inform the trooper that I was armed if 'I' was stopped but since my wife was driving technically 'I' wasn't stopped and
b:since she was at my window did I have to inform her I was armed?

My question is since I wasn't stopped was I even supposed to tell her?
(I did, she seemed a little miffed)
I'm just curious as to how or what do you expect the passenger to say if he or she is armed and if the fact it was my car and she was at my window made any difference.
Had she made a drivers side approach I would have just kept my hands where she could see them and STFU but like I said she was looking at me and tapping on my window at the initial contact so it sure seemed to me like 'I' was stopped.
Thoughts?

Maybe not the best post to be taking advice from.

Yes. You should inform if you have the duty to inform. Even if you are a passenger in a vehicle that is stopped, you are also detained for the duration of the stop.

Here in NC, you have a duty to inform also. If I pull over a car and the passenger has a weapon and does not tell me. When I find out, they will be going to jail. Though first offense of failure to notify for a CCW holder is an infraction here so no jail for that. But the second time it's a misdemeanor, so it's jail time.

metal, come on over to Carry Issues and ask... Carry Issues. We have some Florida folks there who might could help, and I think they are sober and their spell check works...

FHP generally do the passenger side approach to get out of traffic. If it were me, it wouldn't make a difference if you disclosed or not, as long as I can see everyone's hands, things are okay. I'm not sure why the trooper was miffed unless she thought you were trying to get out of a ticket, but then again who knows.

BTW what was the speed and did she write a coupon?

What are you talking about? I do it all the time! Nikerret is just a light weight!

I'd been taught that if you're armed, you SHALL inform the officer at the earliest possible time, but if you're not, no big deal. Now, since I don't fear CPL holders, it was never a problem to me if they waited until I was done with my shpiel to tell me they had a CPL and were carrying, but I've known a few cops that expected you to tell them immediately, but would have gotten upset if you cut them off. To me, that's a no-win situation, and I try not to set anyone up for failure. I try.

In sum, I'd say you did right, especially if you had a weapon. Tell the trooper and don't move your hands or make any sudden moves and I can't see any reasonable officer jamming you up over that.

Everyone in GNG would really get to wondering, then.

This is by far one of the funniest things that I have ever read! I literally caught myself tearing up.

Though I do not live in areas where we shall nor must inform, as a courtesy to the officer I ALWAYS inform them. For me, I do the following when the lights come on:

Pull over.
Roll windows down.
Turn off car.
Keep hands on wheel and have all passengers keep hands on lap.
Once officer finishes their initial contact with me, I politely look them in the eye and state "Sir/Ma'am, I have a permit to carry a firearm and I am currently armed. How do you want to proceed?"
Once they inform me how they want to proceed, I do exactly what they want me to do.

This is the abbreviated version of how things go, but you should get my idea. Does this necessarily have to happen? No it does not, but it works for me on both sides of the traffic stop.

I have always handed over my CCW with my DL Ins and Reg. never had a problem in any of the states where I have been visited by the local welcoming party. To me, if/when I am finally a LEO that's the way I would like to find out, just seems like a common courtesy, LEO's have a hard enough time as it is I don't need to add any excitement to their evening.

yea, 85 in a 70, she wrote her for the full boat too.

IMHO the fact my wife didn't see a fully marked squad, running laser, parked sideways in the median on a clear sunny day is a whole nother story she's gonna hear about for years to come. lol

when I've been in FL, people drive fast as hell. Your wife would have been fine if she'd have stayed in the right lane so people could pass..

I took my ambien (original quick release) 45 minutes ago, so I am starting to get the buzz. The hypothesis for my experiment is that I must now have superpowers to translate the musings of altered GTers. I suspect my new superpower would include ambien, lunesta, and maybe xanax translation.

The result of the experiment is the the hypothesis is complete crap. Tmax for my ambien is 90 minutes, so I could repeat the test in 45 minutes at the height of my superpowers. The problem is that I need sleep and if I stay up must longer, I will fight the ambien for hours.

No luck at full dose. I suggest an immediate plan whereby each GTer take your drug of choice and see if the quote makes sense. Report back with your findings. We're counting on you!
