Range Report - New M&P Shield

OK, was able to get to the range this evening with the new shield. Had 150 rounds on hand, 100 target, 50 JHP. It ate them all without a hitch. The first couple times, getting the 7th round into the short mag was an adventure - took a good amount of effort. By the end of the session, it was easier, but still took some effort. Also, when fully loaded the short mag takes a fairly hefty smack to get it fully seated. The extended mag was both easier to load and easier to seat.

I fired it at 5 yards, 7 yards, and for the hell of it, 25 yards. Accuracy was impressive. It shot to point of aim and stayed in the center of the target nicely. At 25 yards, I was at least able to keep all of the rounds in the circle of the target, and I wasn't taking particular care. At 5 yards, I put 9 rounds into a big hole:

Felt recoil was surprisingly light, and fast follow-up shots were easily managed.

After the range, it disappears under a t-shirt in a cheap nylon holster - there will be a quality holster for it coming soon, though. It also fits really nicely in the back pocket of my jeans in a pocket holster.

I do believe that I am in love with this one.

I am indeed impressed with your forensic abilities! If I'm going to get accused anyway, next time I'll claim it as the 25 yard target :P

Thanks for the report.

Looks like a wonderful single stack option.

Can you share your thoughts of how it fits, if so, in the front pocket of a set of jeans?

The only thing I've found so far that fits the bill in 9mm has been the Kahr PM9 or CM9 (the MK9 is too clunky for me)

It fits in my jeans, but I am a pretty dang big guy. If the jeans are snug, it's print a lot. As it is, I would definitely want a pocket holster to break up the outline.

Yeah, just saw the other topics on it.....looks like they answered the demand for a nice single stacker.

So how was the trigger? Do you have any experience with the other M&Ps so that you can describe the differences?

I do have experience with other M&Ps. The Shield trigger definitely has a noticeable reset. My full-size had the "false reset" where you'd feel and hear a click, but the trigger hadn't reset yet. The Shield has a nice audible/tactile click at the reset point.

There was a small bit of grit in the take-up, but it smoothed up considerably in the first shooting session.

I do prefer the Shield trigger to the regular M&P trigger.

Good to hear.

Thanks for your thoughts on the pistol.

What's that extra lever on the back? Can you file it off

Nice group, in spite of the powder burns on the target

I tried to file it off, but it broke Mrs Aahzz's nail file.

What ammo will you be running in this pistol for CCW? I was reading thru the online manual that the pistol is technically rated for +p ammo, but they strictly advise against the +p+ variety. I'm thinking along the Hornady CD since it is a barrel shorter than the G26 3.5".

Another question I have.... I read on another forum earlier today that the feedramp was NOT polished like the other M&P pistols in S&W lineup. The writer showed pictures where obvious machining marks were present on his feedramp. How's the fit and finish been?

looks like a winner.... S&W are gonna sell these like hot cakes. But One of the reasons I got rid of my mp45c was b/c it was hard to seat a topped off mag with out the slide being back. My mp9c doesn't have that issue. And I just bought a kahr cm9 so I can't justify buying this one yet, since my mp9c conceals nicely, and the cm9 conceals where that one cant. And a LCP for summer t-shirt and shorts weather.

I run the Winchester White Box JHPs. I realize that they aren't the latest, high performance bullet - but, I can afford to shoot enough of them to know that my gun functions well with them, and can shoot my carry ammo more frequently.
