Just find an old police trade in Model 10/64 in 38 special with a 4" barrel, get some wadcutters, and go have fun at the range. The guns are as inexpensive as guns get these days, the same can be said for the ammo. If the recoil from that combination bothers you, take up cross stitch or something.

And they just look cool.

(Yea...yea....all you purists...I know it's not a "model 10" but it's close enough for illistration.)

After shooting one for a while, you can trade your semi-auto's in for something else.

I'm glad someone mentioned the loudness of 357. I've not shot a 357 mag yet although I do have a small ruger lcr 357 for pocket carry. I've only put .38 through it. According to a lot of searching I did, 357 mag is one of the worst firearms to shoot without hearing protection. That's no big deal at the range but inside your home it sounds like a bad idea to me. Some folks have posted up with stories of permanent hearing damage or tinnitus from no more than a single shot fired. All firearms pretty much are dangerous to your ears but some more than others. Use your good judgement

Most ranges have revolvers for rent. Try renting a .38 and seeing if you like it. You may or may not like the heavy double action trigger pulls. Lots of good revolvers out there. I like the rugers and they have a good reputation for being sturdy with magnum rounds. They are also generally cheaper than s&w and some will say you get what you pay for. They are both good

Go with a 357mag, such as a Smith 686 or Ruger GP100.

yes, shooting .357 out of most revolvers without hearing protection is a very easy way to get hearing damage and tinnitus. don't ask me how I know

If I were to ever take up collecting, I think it would be old .357 and .38 revolvers

Someone's in your bedroom in the middle of the night, so you grab your .357 bedside gun. Better make sure you get him with your first shot, because you're gonna be blind and deaf for the followup.

Actually, I own quite a few Colt revolvers, other than these Pythons. However, other than the Python, I prefer Smith & Wessons.

The Python is a very special revolver, but the other Colts take a backseat to S&W, in my opinion.

You can't go wrong with any S&W or Ruger.

How about a S&W 25 or 625 in .45 ACP?

Affirmative. My 19-4 was my first, best and most fun to shoot. Even after 30+ years it's a sweet gun.

If you can find any decent model 66 with 3" barrel, GRAB IT. They also made some "Ladysmith" snubs in the K frame in 3" and they are super guns. An M10 with 3" barrel is another winner, especially if it has factory nickel finish.

If those guns were legally in California, those could be your 401k. See them selling for $3K and up all the time.

I've got an H110 handload that propels a 125 gr JHP out of my 6" Security Six at 1658 fps. When you shoot that thing, you are made aware of what it is. A gigantic orange fireball out front coupled with some significant lift.

I would truly HATE to set one of those off in a close quarters enclosure in the middle of the night.
