Exactly. It's just the common way to say it.

I am either very confused by some sort of abstract physics or this is plain wrong. Equal masses will weigh the same provided they are being acted on by the same gravity. So therefore, on earth, equal masses weigh the same.

It is a common way of saying it incorrectly. It is also an indication that people do not understand what is happening when they train.

Jack you are correct. The correct term people need to use is Density. Muscle is denser than fat. Density is the ratio between weight (technically mass) and volume. Density = Weight / Volume

Well, not every one of us wants to give a physics lesson to every doofus that's dumbfounded by the concept that 2 guys of about the same size can have greatly different weights if one is ripped, and one is flabby.
"Muscle weighs more than fat" It conveys the general point in a way they understand quickly.
Ever hear the term (and it's a scientific term) "heavy metals"?. Notice they aren't called "denser metals", or "metals of great mass per volume". They're heavy metals, because they're heavier in equal volumes.
Balsa is a very light wood.
Helium is lighter than air.
Water is heavier than oil.
None of us think you're wrong. We just don't get why you're so opposed to a common colloquialism. You're in a situation where you are the right one in a situation where almost no one else knows or cares. You can embrace the phrase or spend the rest of time correcting people futilely and trying to convince them that you're the one soldier that's marching in step and the rest of the platoon is wrong.

If it hurts, keep doing it until your body adapts.
A friend has a messed up elbow because a coach insisted he keep doing heavy curls until the pain went away. The pain was a tendon tearing.

Ok. You're correct.
However your analogy of heavy metals is bogus. They are called heavy because they have high atomic mass not because of their relative density. Additionally, a lot of heavy metals are not metals at all, they are metalloids. Heavy metals is a misnomer.

Probably the dumbest things I keep hearing are that you can isolate your upper/middle/lower chest by changing the angle of a bench press, and that you can actually shape muscles instead of just making them bigger or smaller or losing fat off them. Some people don't have the genetics to get enormous peaks on their biceps, yet they think turning their wrist and doing preacher curls fixes all that.

Those quotes are common in the general forum, yes.
Not in this specific forum.
Are you the same Berfles that posts on wannabebig?

Most (?) bodybuilding books encourage wanna-bee Dorian-Arnold-Lee Schwartz-en-Yate-eys; no sales if the truth is widely told.

Not strictly bad workout advice but...
I work with a guy that I've known since our college days. Over the past 25 years, he's done no exercise and eaten whatever he wanted. (A big bowl of ice cream every night before bed, etc.) Put on 150+ pounds. But he held that he was perfectly healthy because his measured cholesterol numbers stayed constant around 150 - 160.
I visited him in the hospital just after his quad-bypass this spring. His cholesterol still measured below 160...

It's not true at all. It's an uninformed opinion that isn't based in science at all. It's a modern age thing. Throughout our history children hunted young, lifted heavy objects, and did hard work. But in our modern society we've been conditioned to "protect" our children so much that some people are scared to let them get their hands dirty at all. They can't play dodge ball, lift weights, shoot, or anything else that a soft liberal society has deemed as "unhealthy" whether it be physically or psychologically. We all hear about people with "bad" backs or "bad" knees, and they usually attribute it to lifting when they were younger. These people usually can't tell you what is "bad" about their body part, they simply say that they hurt it and blame lifting. And the uneducated believe them, and pass that belief on. And if it's "bad" for a full grown adult, it must be "bad" for children.

I would sig this if it wasn't so long.
