Fedora17 questions

After a conversation here, I decided it had been too long since I ran linux as my primary OS. So I got a laptop from the warehouse. I did a primiare install of Windows and then an install of Fedora17.

So far so good, but things have changed a good bit since the last time and I have forgotten alot.

The first issue is, I didn't get to choose packages with this install. I think I am missing a few key items...like a C compiler. This is stopping me from installing NMAP and I think Nessus.

So I would appreciate some help getting C compiler and any other hints.

Thanks.

Getting same Gnome running would also be nice.

Lots of ways to install what you need, I've concluded 'yum' is a good place to start on RedHat distributions. If a 'yum' repository doesn't have a RPM, I'll look for one directly in a search engine.

Compilers are usually available.

Interestingly, 'yum install /usr/bin/gcc' works. More directly,

yum install gcc g++ libgcc

I havent migrated to Fedora 17 yet. Iv been using Fedora 16 for a while though and love it. The biggest thing with Fedora and gnome 3 that i can suggest is install extensions. A quick google will show you the official extensions site. I have mine set up perfectly and have no real issues with it.

As for installing applications, your options are terminal/yum, the graphical interface for package installation, and easylife. Easylife is an application that will give you a list of the most common programs you will use and install them all for you. Makes a fresh install extremely easy.

Extensions are basically prewritten code to modify different aspects of the shell and user interface. Once i installed fedora 16, i basically just went down the list and added all the things i i felt like it was missing. Like the ability to save items to the desktop. I know they wanted to keep the desktop clean looking, but I cant stand not having that functionality.

Dont forget to add conky to your system. You will have to google how to set it up, but conky is great system monitor to have on your screen at all times. plus the stuff you can do with it is really cool.

If you're rusty with YUM, you can install "yumex" (i think that stands for yum extension)... It's basically a GUI front for YUM. Makes packages easier to find, etc.

as root: yum install yumex

Fedora has an 'Add software' utility for the packages in the distribution.
Look in the system utilties. You will need the root password.
