Buying a gun soon.357 sig... 10mm... .357 mag?

I thought about adding the .50 cal but I can't afford a Desert Eagle.

Things are starting to come together for me and I'll be buying a new handgun (and possibly rifle) so I would like to know what are your experiences with these calibers. I really would like to gather is some opinions on the power factor of these three calibers. I understand that the first two I'm asking about are autoloader calibers while the last is a revolver caliber. While I only own two semi auto's I don't have a strong prefence to autoloaders and will consider buying a revolver. This will be a safe gun and range gun. I don't plan on stock piling anyone of these calibers, I did that with my two 9mm's and that's all the ammo I need. So since this next purchase will not fill a self defense role of any sort I am open to any opinions but I'd like to stay with these three calibers... The 454 casulls, 44 mag's and 500 S&W's etc. I'd rather not own, just way too much gun for me.

All three calibers are fun to shoot. The .357 mag will offer the most ammo choice when hopping locally ive found. My lgs usually has a few more selections of 10mm than 357 sig, but 5 choices max. For power and tacticool factor id go g20

Don't get me wrong, the 10mm is awesome. I have had several encounters with a "smoking deal" on a G20, but have turned all of them down. For me, it came down to ammunition availability and price. Bottom line.

And for the record, I own both .357 sig and .357 magnum. I love the .357 sig, incredible round.

Powerwise, .357mag and 10mm literally overlap almost exactly when loaded right up to their max.

.357sig mimicks the .357mag revolver 125gr loading, which was a very successful combo in police use.

For a range/safe gun, the revolver has strong points;

Takes anything from mousefart .38sp target wadcutters, +p defense loads and the whole range of .357mag, of course. No brass to chase, target accuracy, close to perfect reliability. Great range/outdoors gun.

The 10mm auto will give you .357mag power in a higher capacity, lighter recoiling platform with faster reloads. In my experience, the G20 is also a very accurate pistol too, and can handle the whole outdoors thing like the revolver, albeit not quite the trigger unless you go 1911 style pistol.

IMO, the .357sig doesn't meet your wants quite as well for a range gun, ammo is not as common, and power levels are typically tailored toward defense use exclusively whereas 10mm and .38sp/.357mag run a wide range.

You can get a little more out of a 10mm than a 357 mag, especially if you reload.

If you don't reload, I'd recommend a 357 magnum. You can shoot 38s and 357s, and the ammo costs should be easier to deal with than the other two calibers.

I have a Smith and Wesson 686 and a G29SF. I would hate to get rid of either, they're two of my favorites. But if I could really only keep one then the 686 stays.

I have .357 SIG and 10mm and love shooting both of them. If you are looking for a pistol and rifle, a .357 Mag revolver/levergun combo would be nice to have.

My vote is for 10mm. When loaded up to it's original Norma specs, it's more like 41 Magnum. But even that is quite controllable...not much more perceived recoil than 45acp in my Delta Elite.

I have 2 10mm handguns in the 1911 platform, a Delta Elite and a DW Cbob, and I love them both.

I like the 357 Sig for the simple fact that I have .40 barrels for my Glocks and Sigs in that caliber. The magazines are compatible for both rounds, and .40 for target shooting practice is cheap, and easy to reload. I have mastered the reloading of the .357 Sig, so that is cheap for me as well. My next purchase is going to be a G-24 and will get a extended .357 Sig barrel. (http://www.lonewolfdist.com/Detail.a...OD=987&CAT=240).

+1. Don't get me wrong, I also love all of my revolvers, but currently the .357 is one of my favorites. Fun to shoot, and also an excellent round.

Hard to beat a good .357 revolver, but the G20 does it. High capacity and you can get barrels for .40, .357 Sig, 9x25 Dillon, 9mm IIRC and a couple of more that I think I forgot about. I have guns in all of the OP's mentioned calibers and love them all. But if I had to pick just one, it would be the G20. Although, my 4" SS GP100 .357 is a very close second.

I don't have a 10MM.
I have had 38/.357 for many years. Can't say anything but good about the caliber.

Recently I ran across a new Glock 33, .357 SIG.
I wasn't interested in either a Glock or .357 SIG but the price was only $350.

I have to say I'm very impressed with the round and the little Glock (and I don't like Glocks).

The gun/round is VERY accurate and VERY powerful.
The down side is the factory ammo is VERY expensive.

Immediately I bought loading dies and 2,000 once fired cases, so I'm shooting it cheap.

I would think you would enjoy the .357 MAG or .357 SIG.

It's been "doin' the job" since the 1930s!!!!!

(Just don't get one of those S&Ws that got a hole drilled in the side!!!!!)

Hold out for a mdl 27 or mdl 28. Either one will handle anything/everything you throw at it!!

It all comes down to your choice, but...
I am one that thinks everyone should own a .357 mag revolver (and a shotgun). It has got to be one of the most versatible handguns ever produced.
And, the 10mm is a great round, and the G20 is a great gun, but the energy of the 2 loaded to max is not equal, from what I've seen. They're close, but the mag has a little more.
If I was goping to get a G20, I would wait for the Gen 4. I have a Gen 4 G21 and it is awesome.

Since you are looking for a safe gun/range gun, I would buy a Smith and Wesson 627 8 shot .357 magnum. Most of the purists out there will pooh pooh on the lock, or that a revolver should be a six shot, well,they are welcome to their opinions. If the lock offends you that bad, it can be disabled and the hole filled. Now, if I were buying something to carry, it would be a Glock 29, or a J frame centennial .357

Speaking of revolvers, I have 2 Dan Wesson revolvers. One in 357 mag, one in 44 mag. Both awesome to shoot. Everyone should own a revolver !

Get the one you think is coolest. You'll shoot it more.

If it's honestly a tie, go .357 mag. I like the Smith 686. You'll be amazed what it can do with some old school lead semi-wadcutters.

Get a g20 and get the lone wolf 357sig conversion barrel. I personally dont have a use for the 357sig.

I just picked up 10 Ruger revolvers from the Security Six to the GP100 series from 1975 to the 1995 era and I will not sell any of them. They are my collections of revolvers. I do have 3 semis,LC9,P95,and a P97 all from Ruger. I used to own those blocked up Glocks,but,NO MORE. Couldn't conceal them properly. A .357/38 revolver will do you very well and,you won't have to chase brass from a semi.

I came very close to buying a 627 awhile back. Awesome gun.
