Kayak Fishing
Just ordered a 10 foot kayak for fishing http://www.oldtowncanoe.com/kayaks/h...10_angler.html
Any suggestions for add ons other than a paddle leash? And one for my fishing pole?

Hey congrats on the yak!
Mine is just a Dick's Sporting goods Trophy Fusion 126 but I fished several times a week out of it last summer. Mostly for channel cat with some bass mixed in.
First thing I did was buy 2 of these:
And put them in front of me at a 45 degree angle. They lock the pole in too which is nice when it's late at night and BOTH are getting hit at the same time.
Cant find a pic of the paddle holders I use, but they screw on the side running down the yak and basically are a C that you can fit the shaft of the paddle into with some force.
You're also gonna need an anchor, which is tricky. I never did the fancy pulley system since I usually fish a lake, I just tied some 550 cord around a 5-10 lb rock and tie it off on the back handle of my yak. (Redneck ingenuity) lol
GOOD LUCK!

That's a really nice boat Jellster! I wish I could have gotten one like that, but the weight limit was too low. The 325 limit on mine is less of a safety margin that I would prefer. For some reason all but the expensive 10 foot boats don't go much over 300.
Thanks I was looking at those holders.
The model I bought came with an anchor and a system to move it from front to back on the boat. Also ordered a bungee paddle holder.

Seems to me like a good reason for a Mossberg Mariner...
You never know... when a aquatic monstrosity is going to attack.
Or a massive sturgeon wants to pay you a visit.

Been out in it a couple times. Nice boat but very wet ride. The cockpit is open so far forward that all the water from your paddle drops on your feet.

Haup, have you tried adjusting the drip rings on your paddle? Is your stroke correct? Lastly, is there any type of skirt available for your yak?
Once upon a time I had a wilderness systems pamlico and was lucky enough to pick up a skirt at dicks for like $5.
Yaks are a lot of fun, very few places they cant go.

Stay away from the paddle leash. It isn't necessary and it will be great for getting tangled in and drowning.

I have playing with the drip rings. I may be digging too much with the paddle. I grew up in a canoe. And a skirt is big money for the one I have, the cockpit opening is almost the length of my legs. I may make a half skirt over the winter.
I randomly didn't use the leash last time out. I used it on my fishing pole so I wouldn't drop it instead. The paddle floats, the pole doesn't. lol

Do not fish in a kayak without heavy duty stabilizers. The kayak idea seems like a natural for fishing. But the act of fishing requires a safe platform. Also use an auto self inflatable life vest. Drag a light weight line of suitable length behind you just in case. That from my single handed sailing days.

Stabilizers? It's not like you are standing. It's more stable than a canoe. In fact, I would have to work to flip mine in anything but serious waves(and I would be long on shore by then) And I always wear a life vest.

If you got a yak, you need some stabilizers you won't be disappointed.

Putting stabilizers on it would completely destroy the reason for having one. I would never make it through the lily pads.

I have a Native Ultimate 12', MantaRay 12', and Wilderness Systems Tarpon 100. I regularly fish from the Ultimate 12' and have fished from the other two. Stabilizers would be a total waste of money AND a pain in the rear. Like you said, it would defeat the purpose of a kayak. Many people hear kayak and the last thing that comes to mind are the recreation style boats that many of us have become accustomed to fishing out of.

I used to kayak fish every weekend through high school. It's crazy fun and you can go anywhere in them. Stabilizers are stupid and useless. If the fish is big enough, let him tow you around for a second. It'll wear him out and it feels cool as well.

I keep mine in a 3rd floor apartment. And to transport it, I tie it on the roof of my car with foam blocks and a strap system that goes through the doors of my car. Works well enough for short trips.
Not sure where you are at, but if you have a Meijer around in the spring they carry 10 footers for around 200. Only downside is they only have a 225 pound weight limit. Also, look on Amazon.com I got mine there with free shipping.

Problem I ran into yesterday. How do you guys keep the fish you catch? I used a stringer that has the clips on it, but it was a bit of a pita due to the drag and weeds.

My dad uses a scuba clip. Basically it looks like a big safety pin. If he is going through kelp he just tosses them into his cockpit or storage bin behind him.

Caught a 6 inch bluegill and a bunch of 4-5 inchers. Just a little too small to clean. But it was a great 3 hours on the water. Till the wind kicked up hard. Was a long half mile back to the boat launch. Then just as I got out of the boat it started pouring. Only lasted 5 min though.
