My Ruger 77/17 is an awesome rifle for the money, pop cans at 200 yds all day long. Tons of fun.

Check out the bolt action CZ's also. That .17 is a good caliber but I'm sticking to the 22 mag. I do some critter hunting and just adjust for ranges. Start with 22 LR, then 22 mag, then go up to .223

Just clarify, are you asking about the HMR or the 17 Mach 2? I ask as I'm a huge fan of the Mach 2 for target shooting and squirrel hunting.

Gunnersalley- Why such a big fan of the Mach 2 for squirrels? I've only used .22lr and .410 on squirrel (and rabbit) and figured the .17s (either of them) would chew them up pretty good. I've never fired either .17 so I'm just looking for some knowledge. (OP, Sorry if this is high jacking the thread. If it is I'll bail out and start a different one.)

Backbore - Not a problem at all. I'm happy to answer. Please keep in mind, this is my humble opinion and just my opinion.
I'm an avid squirrel hunter and have owned/own a number of 22's, 17 HMR's, and 17 M2's. While I love the 22 round, the 17m2 is an absolute tack driving squirrel round. It's a very flat shooting round with legitimate 100 yard effective range on tree rats. Costwise, a box of HM2 is only slightly more (say 6.50) or so a good quality box of 22 rounds. It's much more cost effective to shoot as compared to the larger 17HMR, which runs anywhere from $10.50 to $12 per box.
The HM2 is only slightly louder than a 22 and doesn't tear the meat up like an HMR. Personally, I have far less crawl-off's with the Mach 2 as compared to a 22. The M2 moves around 2100 to 2200 fps, so it is highly effective on squirrels.
A word or warning if you happen to be considering an M2 gun: I'd be very wary of any semi-auto M2 as most rimfire makers have discontinued producing any semis chambered for the round due to out of bolt firings. I'd personally stick with a bolt gun. Someone above mentioned a CZ? They are outstanding rimfire rifles for the money and you cannot go wrong with one. While CZ isn't currently making any rifles chambered for the M2, they did make it for the very popular CZ 452. If you keep your eye open on Gunbroker, you can usually find one for under $450.
While I have 22's that are awesome tree rat guns, I have a special fondness for the M2 as it kicks some squirrel tail.

Savage & Marlin make nice riffles for the $$
CZ's are a little more but worth it IMO.

I bought the Savage 93R17HVSS and absolutely love it. Stainless bull barrel and synthetic stock. Put a Center Point 4-16x40 scope and a bipod on it, and also did a custom paint pattern on the stock. This gun is a total tac driver. Deadly accurate and just a blast to shoot. Everything runs nice and smooth, the bolt is like butter. And I especially like the accutrigger. Smooth and crisp.
