What would you do, Sightmark or keep looking

I bought a Sig Sauer 522, those unfamiliar it is a folding stock type black rifle in .22lr that is a little brother of a 556. I do not have the rifle in hand yet, the sale is in process. After looking over a whole bunch of sights and self educating thru reading and watching vids etc, and on the recommendation of the person/shop I bought the rifle from, he suggested Sightmark Red dot sight. Seller is a LPD, Sniper, tactical response, etc. so I give his opinion some weight. I did not buy the scope from him, just took his recommendation.

I ordered the Sightmark non reflex/hologram, the scope type of red dot sight from Amazon for $68. The sight arrives so I take it out of the box and notice that when operating the on/off switch it might have a problem. Turn to #1 okay, #2 the light goes off but will come back on if I set the control just outside of the click stop. #3,4,5 all work as advertised. 5 is very bright in intense sunlight, #2 or 3 will most likely be the most used, so I have a dud. Looks like someone purchased from Amazon, saw the problem and rather than dealing with a warranty repair returned to Amazon and it got resold as new. I think there is gun oil on the new scope which is why I think it is a second timer.

Contacted Sightmark, they said send it in we will repair or replace at their discretion. Right now I'm debating as to whether I should just send it back to Amazon and buy something else (been looking over Midway offerings, lots of nice choices for $100ish) or send it in for repair and if I get back a repaired scope and not new, then send it back to Amazon and buy something else.

What say yinzers?

The sightmark looks cheesy to me, and has horrible reviews on Amazon... I'd ship it back to Amazon as defective if in your shoes. Look up the Vortex: Strikefire and SPARC (they come with AR mounts). I know it's only a .22lr but a good optic is pretty crucial to enjoyable range time... If you really want to keep it cheap I've also seen positive reviews of the Bushnell TRS-25. Most stories I've encountered are people buying multiple cheap optics then finally giving up and buying something more expensive. As for your LPD friend, I suspect he knows a lot about high end optics. That doesn't translate into knowledge of cheaper products though, it's quite possible he just suggested sightmark because it looks kind of like an EOtech.

This is the sight I'm recommended a buddy for his AR on a budget
The coupon code is still valid in the vid and will run you $150
Nutnfancy also had a favorable review of this one.

I really liked the review he did on the rifle, it was the tipping point to buy for me vs anything else I had looked at, 6 or 7 different branded rifles.

I'm thinking I'm capping the budget at $100-$120. It is for a plinking rifle, nothing more. I'm gonna keep looking as I'm leaning towards a scope that has a few more view options and green/red option.

Okay, did my due diligence this evening. the more I pondered why I should take the time and effort of shipping what should be a brand new functioning scope back to the mfger for repair, I decided screw that, put the blame back to Amazon and let them deal with it and in that case I'm not out any money shipping.

So I have read multiple reviews of the Bushnell and it appears to have everything I was thinking originally I wanted in a scope sight. So I returned the Sightmark and bought the Bushnell. The only thing I'm concerned about is the 28mm opening, I'm wondering how much difference 2mm will make, 30mm vs 28mm. And if this one does not work out it is YOUR FAULT

Dude... I'm married, I'm more than used to everything being my fault.

I don't have the red/green model, just the regular red. Because I'm red/green colorblind. But mine's been top notch.

they have been around a long time, Redfield, Nikon, like almost everything these days it is produced elsewhere and HOPEFULLY they have a standard that needs to be met for QC. I think I got it right this time. I had actually written that model down on a piece of paper as I was doing my search prior to you suggesting it, one of the complaints was that by changing reticles, the setting was now different, meaning it was not a seamless transition from one to another, providing I was understanding what a reviewer wrote. I have a feeling once I begin using the scope I'll settle on a narrow set of settings and those that i like I stick with.

I have a Sig 522 SWAT. Fun gun to shoot. With the lower recoil, a lower priced alternative is a smart decision. I bought a Sightmark Adjustable reticle sight from Amazon for my Ruger Mark II Target Competition. It is decent for the money. The Reticle type can be adjusted and the intensity can be adjusted, also. It's very thin and flimsy feeling and it's definitely nowhere close to Eotech/Aimpoint.

I have an Eotech 512 and 3x Magnifier on my 522, now. It is the package deal my buddy had sold to me. It is overkill but I did manage to hit a 10" steel plate at 250 yards with it, so the combination does work.

If I get another sight, it will be a Burris.

without the rifle or the scope. USPS has got to be the slowest on the planet for delivery. I ordered a good 6 days ago and the last check said 2 more days The rifle, FX tried to deliver to the FFL holder, he was closed for the day @4pm and the delivery attempt was 4:11pm, so if they are late to his biz today it will be next week before I can get there to pick up.

You'll like the 522. It's fun and most indoor ranges allow you to shoot it.

The fixed sights are total junk. I removed the rear sights. The front sights have to go.

Let me know what you think WHEN you get it.

And in my house. I installed the sights, front was a bear to knock into place, put the rear on and sort of just got further familiar with the manual and parts. In advance of it's arrival I had bought 4 25 rnd black dog mags, a sling and hooks, and a Midway bag/case. Now I just have to wait till monday to get to go shoot it, I'm sure the scope will be here by then. It will be a fun day. When I would get frustrated waiting for it, I would just go to Youtube Nutnfancy 522, and watch his vid.

So the gun came in already? I always try to shoot with what I have, first. However, the rear sights wiggle.

So I came back today shooting my Ruger Mark II with the Sightmark Adjustable reticle sights. After every few shots the reticle would get distorted. So much for trying to go cheap. I would set the barrel down in front of me and then the reticle would reset back to normal. Sometimes it took a bit of a shake with the finger off of the trigger, of course. So much for going cheap. I'm likely going to do a Matchdot Ultradot.

After 500 rounds

it runs like a sewing machine Wow it is very fun to shoot, I played around a lot with the scope of the first day and was getting frustrated with adjustments, the manual did not offer much in advice so I reviewed a few web based articles upon adjusting a red dot and I think I'm down to a few clicks here and there and i'll be zeroed in. Was shooting it from a standing position with a tall table at the range using my range bag as a rest. I'm going to get a bipod that attaches to the front rail and quickly removable for a final setting.

I called Bushnell because I was reading and wondering if it was true that when you changed reticle settings do you need to zero in again and it turns out you do, just a few clicks but still have to fiddle. But I suspect what will happen is I'll settle on a favorite setting and be done with it. May do some testing of settings to see how much change is needed between settings. After I got it set on the almost perfect setting I was wailin' on the steel from 20 yards or so. Fun stuff.

Mine was zeroed for 25 yards on a handgun. I was hitting 75 and 100 yards with my Mark II by Ruger.

However, I just bought an Ultradot MatchDot.
