Issues with magazines dropping

Greetings GT’ers,

I am hoping I can get some sage advice on what might be causing the magazines to unexpectedly drop from my G17 gen 1.

A little background:
This is my only Glock which I purchased new Feb 1987. For 25 years I have not had a problem with this pistol and estimate I have fired 3000 rounds through it. It is in its original configuration and has the original non-drop free factory mags.

About a month ago at the range I was letting my Father-in-Law shoot it and the magazine dropped down about 1 inch and FTF. At first I thought maybe he accidently pushed the mag release but through observation I was able to rule this out. Then I thought warn out mag. So I loaded up the second mag and the same thing happened. I wasn’t able to do any troubleshooting at the range as I didn’t have any tools.

When I got back home I gave it a good cleaning. I pulled the mag release out and checked it over. There is obvious wear but appears to marry up to the notch on the magazine fine. However, it is hard to tell if the wear on the release is the culprit. My next thought was maybe the catch spring. I didn’t pull the spring out of the frame but it did not appear bent or otherwise malformed. I reassemble it and took it to the range last weekend and experienced the same issue. The mag drops anywhere between 2 and 5 rounds left in the mag. Even though I didn’t think ammo was the culprit I decided to test 4 different manufactures just to rule it out. It didn’t matter, whatever ammo was used the issue could be replicated.

So my thought is the mag release is worn and needs to be replaced. I have included some pics of the mag release. Does anyone else have any thoughts on troubleshooting I might try or ideas of the cause of the problem?

GlockStore.com has a factory magazine catch for less than $4 and a new spring also for less than $4

I would just replace them and see how it worked out.

Shooter is the most likely cause.
Replace with new father in law. Free, no shipping needed.

How can you tell that he is not contacting the release on recoil?

Did you shoot it, and it happened to you also?

To test, slap in a mag, pull hard from below, really hard, tug/push several times, in and out-- if it comes out, it is a worn lever. If not, it is an inexperienced shooter contacting the button on recoil.

Naw, he's a pretty good guy. Besides my wife would never let me hear the end of it.

While shooting I had him hold his thumb well above the release on the grip. His thumb was never anywhere near the release and the mag dropped.

I did shoot it the same day and after checking everything over at home. For twenty five years this has never been a problem with this pistol. I did have this issue with a brand new Taurus. That turned out to be a deformed slide causing that problem.

I'll do another tug test. I did try that before but I didn't tug real hard. Thanks for the assist.
