My first inclination is to say, "Who cares." I always lock the bolt and the safety bar so no one is getting in while I'm in there anyway. The only concern I would have is with someone coming in while I was away and stealing stuff or staying in the room until I return.

That's amazing. On the other hand, I can open about 90% of private residence fron doors in about 5 seconds without anyone realizing it's been done.

I dont think most people understand how easy it is to get into a home/hotel/locked area, and when they find out it scares them.

I remember when I was in college, my wife had locked the door, accidentally, on our apartment when we went to water the flowers. I was ready to smash a window when she walks up to two guys in the parking lot and asks them if we can use their phone. She explains what happened, and one of the guys says "Oh, I can fix that."

He walks up to the door, pulls out a jim, pops the door open, smiles and walks away.

My mouth was just agape - not to how quick or easily that he did it, but that my wife just happened to find someone in our parking area what had a jim, and the knowledge of how to pop a door lock...

I used to pick locks for fun and even did it a few times on the job instead of busting doors down wihen we knew nobody was home.

It is easier than most people ever realize.

I think it's funny how my neighbors work to lock and secure a patio door that is full glass.

Every single thing that is created to provide selective access can be breached by someone who is not authorized to be there.

The only things that cannot be breached are those things where there is absolutely NO ACCESS to all parties.

Its not 100% secure.

And I suppose its not 100% unpickable. If you had a bump key with the right initial grinds, on enough of the flats, you could trigger my locks.

However, that said, it would take so long, and be so impracticable to carry enough "bump key" blanks to find the right combination to turn my cylinders.

You'd have to be a pro, and not some street hood who's watched youtube, but a actual certified locksmith to pick my locks.

They're ridiculously expensive for a reason.

That said, there are still lots of ways in, bumping my locks, just isn't one of them.

Have you ever tried to break one of those? They are tough. I took a bunch out of my house and tried to break them. It is not that easy.

Especially if you cover them with burglar resistant film. Either way, I am not a patio door fan.

I think this is a big deal. Hotel rooms weren't very secure before, but the notion that anyone with a little bit of easily concealed equipment can open a door without attracting attention in 1 second is... Disturbing.

The huge bummer is that the vulnerability isn't fixable without a total hardware swap...

Tempered glass is pretty tough. Same as a door glass on a car. Will take a pretty good hit with wood, but with something that has no give, like a hammer it will "explode" Breaks into many small pieces. That is the safety factor of it. (42 yrs in the glass & plastics business)

You could take a spare key. Put it in a sealed container. Then bury it. If that day ever comes you just have to unbury the key. It's a lot safer than leaving a "hide-a-key" somewhere. I doubt any theives are going to dig in random areas for a key. You might want a marker of some kind so you can remember where to dig.
