Never trifle with a man who carries a single shot rifle. Odds are, he knows how to use it.

Is that like always follow the man with one leg, because he ain't taking the long way around and will know all the shortcuts.

And "don't run from the fat cop". (Because he can't chase you, so he's more likely to just shoot you.)

Here is a video with Clint Smith from Thunder Ranch on various shotguns for Home Defense, including a single shot similar to the OP's setup.

With some practice, enough shells, and a good defensible spot, you can repeal borders all day long.

While there's obvious advantages and disadvantages with different styles and platforms, the last words of that video are worthy of being sig-line material:

True of so many things. Imo, many folks would be further ahead with a less-expensive gun, and spending the difference on practice ammo.

One of the nice things about the H&R is that it has an ejector. It throws the empty shell out when you open the barrel.

The other nice thing about it is that the front forearm screw can be undone with a coin (like the dime in the photo) and the whole gun broken down into two narrow 18" pieces. If you wanted to stash it away in a compartment in your truck, trunk, BOB or whatever it is pretty easy to do.

Click the image to open in full size.

Put together it is 32.5" OAL with the rubber pad on it. It could conceivably be cut down to 26" OAL (6" off the stock) and still be legal as long as the barrel stayed at 18". 6" shorter would be about where the far right shotgun shell is in the photo.

I have a TC Encore and a single shot shotgun.

The shotgun is VERY old heirloom. If push came to shove it could be used for a game getter, but....it would not be a first choice.

I originally thought the Encore would have multiple barrels and be the general use gun, but... Barrels are expensive. It is very accurate, but I have to get out of position to load to make the second shot this affects precision grouping. I will probably get another barrel (16inch/308 or 16inch/45LC, for it in the future, but....$$).

If you think you need to arm an large group of newbies....then maybe. But I would prefer to spend my money arming myself with decent to really good stuff and not worry about others. If I have to arm a collective, they will use what I am not using at the time.

Here is the thing with these single shot H&R shotguns and barrels. If you have a shotgun made before 1988 it was made with a cast iron frame. If you have one (including the newer NEF guns) made after 1988 it has a steel frame.

The pre 88 frames will take all low pressure barrels which include all the shotgun (including slug) barrels, handgun calibers including magnums, and low pressure rifle calibers. Low pressure rifle calibers include 30-30, 35 Rem, 444 Marlin, 45-70 etc.

You cannot shoot 30-06 family, 308 family, 223 family, or any other high pressure calibers through them. You have to have a post 88, steel frame NEF/Handi rifle receiver to shoot the high pressure stuff. If memory serves me right, the high pressure frames are marked SB2.

You also have to fit each barrel to the specific frame. Not hard but you do need to know what you are doing.

An acquaintance of mine has a .22 / 20ga single shot I'd like to get a hold of. Neat combo.

One barrel on the frame at a time, or a combo gun (over under) with both barrels on the frame. If the latter...it is a game getter IMHO and well worth having.

Nice truck gun. Ya just cant beat em. I have a few laying around here. I keep alot of broken and demilled guns stashed around the house. I refer to them as bait. My thought is if they break in the will have their arms full of non operable stuff and would more likely leave the safe alone.

I've documented my garage sale finds a couple times in the general firearms forum. That included a Mossberg 500 for $100 and two nice 70s era compound bows with arrows for $30.

Update!

Update....

Just picked up a 20 gauge barrel for the little beastie off of Ebay. Cut it down today. That should make a nice package. Still looking for a 30-30 bbl for it.

Click the image to open in full size.

Notice how thick the walls are on the 20 ga. bbl is compared to the 12. It is about a half pound heavier.

Defensive Shotgun - YouTube
You know, that hat with the stiff brim is very necessary... I tried the same thing he did with the single shot shotgun and the ejected shell went promptly in my eye... and the next shell bounced off my forehead, hard... just watch the segment where his shells actually bounced off the edge of the brim or top of the hat.

Yes, it hurt pretty badly.

My H&R came with the "Survivor" stock. Full size with a compartment on the buttstock. has a 21 in bbl.
12 ga, has a nickel coated finish bbl/action making it an all weather shotgun. Added a sling and an elastic shell holder(had to soak in hot water and stretch over the fiber stock.
In the compartment, I keep a small compass, fire/steel mag block, some paper(for tinder)and a whistle/thermometer/compass.
When stocked with slugs, it kicks hard, with buck a little less. Tough gun for $75.00.(used, but not abused)
I have others, but the H&R has earned it's respect. With a couple rounds in my fingers, can be fast loaded if needed. The extractor does throw the shell casing free everytime.
Great guns.

I hate to ask, but maybe it will keep you out of the grey bar motel.....

The 30-30 you can cut down to 16 inches.
The 12ga needs to be 18 inches. It doesn't look 18 inches in the picture......Um...let me know if I need to delete this post.

I love those single 12 ga guns- fixing up two of my dad's old guns.
I have an eastern arms with no ejector, good gun but i'd like an ejector.

Actually, I took out my H&R and measured out 20" on the barrel because we have to keep our long guns at an OAL of 30" and it looks about right where he cut his.

Looks right to me. It should be 18" from the breech face.
