Shot my first reloads today!!!

Well I went to the range and put 200 rounds through without a hiccup.

Pretty soft shooting all and all, and plenty accurate for the short distance paper punching I was doing.

I took one of my all steel Jericho /baby eagles in 40 just in case I screwed something up

All fed, extracted, shot without issue.

I admit I'm pretty pleased. I collected as much brass as I could

You picked a low-end load and just loaded up 200, or did the 200 include a work-up batch?

I think it's time for us to revisit the mesh tarp idea. We gave up on solid tarps after a couple of range trips; either the wind blew them all over the place or we would trip over the stakes.

The problem is that given the nature of action pistol and differing distances plus movement, we would need a bunch of tarps. And then what's the probability they would be in the right place? There is also the issue of ejection distance. Different guns, different pattern/distance.

OTOH, it's a pain in the knees and back to pick up 500 rounds of brass. Even if we only captured 80% of the brass with the mesh tarp(s) it would be satisfactory.

I tried one of those stiff mesh tarps like the one in unclebob's link, but it didn't work well on un-even ground and they're too bulky when folded. Plus they grab too much dirt/snow.

I'm looking at a nylon mesh that's big enough to hold centerfire cases, but will be less bulky and less stiff and will not hold as much debris. Something like this;

10'X10' would be about $43. It would fold up a lot smaller and would work better on snow (a big bonus for me).

I have one of the HF mesh tarps. It works real well. Its heavy enough to stay put without stakes most of the time. Wind just blows through it. Sand falls through it.

Congratulations on your first loads. It's a great hobby that will help you improve your shooting. I've been reloading for about 3 months now, and I love it.

I would get the largest mesh tarp that the physical limitations of range you shot own will allow. The one I use not bought from Harbor Freight is 6X8. A post in front and in between two shooting benches. Also a Gopher pickup tool works great for the ones that miss the tarp. Harbor Freight sells these also.

It's a feeling of freedom, huh? Knowing you don't have to go buy that expensive, retail ammo, along with knowing that now you can change bullet weight, velocities, etc in order to fine tune to your gun.
