MAK-90 good buy?
I have a guy that has a used MAK-90 that looks to be in good condition, with a straight cut receiver. He's asking $600 for it, with 3 mags. What do you guys think?
Thanks!

That isn't a bad price. With the price of Wasr's these days, I would do it if the condition is good. I am not a big Chicom guy but it is worth that.

Get that Mak-90. You will only regret it, if you pass on buying it.

At least you'd know that your AK was made and assembled by the commies who know how to put a proper AK together.

As fnfalman said, I would not pass up on it. That is a genuine, 100%, commie-built AK. You can return it back to its glory easily too, for the most part, while still complying with 922r.

As long as you know that $600.00 could just be the beginning depending on what you want it to look like in the long-run.
"De-banning" to make the MAK-90 cosmetics look like any other AK is going to mean spending on proper wood - and usually removing the CHICOM double-hook trigger-group to replace with USA parts as well.
And an FSB with the "holder" for the cleaning rod needs to be swapped on. All just cosmetics.

I thought all Mak90s were alike. What are the differences?

Some of straight cut receivers, some have angle cut receivers, some have really light color wood and some have darker cooler wood.

Is there a specific reason for the different receivers or where they just made in different locations?

Another man contacted me, he has a Mak-90, brand new for $500. It has slant cut receiver though. Thoughts on that?

Buy it? It is cheaper than most Wasr's now so it would be silly not to.

IMHO... your wallet; you'll need to spend on Ironwood stocks that are specifically made for the slant-cut recvr - but you'll want USA wood anyway so as to have that "AK" look.
Or pay to have the recvr re-built for square cut - then just look for real CHICOM wood or buy non-slant-cut Ironwood.
And you'll ditch that sweet CHICOM double-hook trigger for a TAPCO G2 - the kind in any WASR.
And maybe the piston too, for another US part if you choose to add the muzzle-threads.
So at the end of the day, you'll have a franken-CHICOM that you spent money on - to make it look like a WASR.
Or - just leave it as-is, thumbhole and all so as to enjoy its full-Chinese-ness. At that point, a MAK90 becomes a good buy.

Here is some information.........
Read this and make sure it does not have the "3rd" hole mentioned. That is for the Auto Sear. Some MAK-90's have them and they are considered Machine guns. Some have even been spotted on Gunbroker. My guess is the people do not really know about this. Like I said, Inspect it first. If it is good to go, then get ready to do the 922r two step if you want to modify it to original looks.
MAK-90s are solid. They are definitely the best AK clones out there in my opinion.

I'm going to be the odd man out here, and say that I never was all that impressed with the MAK-90 in their original condition. The only one I ever owned was a PolyTech (a true PolyTech as it said "PolyTechnologies" on the receiver), and it was for the most part... A neat rifle. What it lacked, was the configuration of a true AK that simply couldn't be made up for with all of its' Chinese "awesomeness".
If you can live with the thumbhole stock, and lack of threaded muzzle then I think the MAK-90 is a decent rifle. If you're just going to de-ban it anyway, then I think a $600.00 entry fee is too much to pay, and I'd steer you toward spending your bucks on an Arsenal of some variety or another.
