I'd say the only ding" against it is that the grips have been replaced.
Other than that, it looks like a good find to me.
As far as the price goes, it seems like a lot of money, but heck a good condition M-1 carbine will set you back approx. $750.00 now days.
Ahhhh, for the days I used to buy those things for $75.00 with ammo thrown in as a "deal sweetener".

I thought that M1911s of said vintages already sported the brown plastic grips?

Um, that would be a hell of a base for a sweet build.

Another vote to keep it as is. I'd replace the recoil spring ans shoot it alot though.

They did, but grips are easily changed.

They did, but if Joe is going to get some work done to it, it won't matter anyway.

That would be a great one to send to Ted and Jason, have it come back looking like this.

I was hoping it was a rare find that I would keep all original. Apparently it's just an old beater Colt GI. I already have a buyer that will let me get my money back out of it. It'll be gone today.

I'm not a Colt historian but that pistol is definitely NOT a junker. I would keep it as is but if you decide to have it restored do it properly by sending it to Turnbull Manufacturing in NY state. Doug Turnbull is doing some of the best work in the country on original Colt 1911 including his famous charcoal blue finishes (when applicable).
