Hello,

My last post started with a negative, so I wanted to start a new thread, one with a fresh start - kinda like what I'm doing with Ubuntu on my machine.

This is where I will post questions that I couldn't find answers to via Google.

I just downloaded Chrome. I understand I have to go to the software center and then download it, but I cannot find the software center!

When I download a file in Ubuntu, where does it go?

Jim,

It will go wherever Firefox (or whatever web browser you're using) tells it to go. It's a function of the software downloading the file, not the operating system. I'm not in front of my Ubuntu laptop right now, but if I'm not mistaken the default downloads folder is in your home directory /home/<jim1970>/download/

The Software Center is one of the icons on the left side. That said, the repository that stores Chrome won't be in your default repository list. Easiest way to install Chrome at this point is to go to http://google.com/chrome and follow the instructions to download and install Chrome. As part of the installation, the correct repositories will be add to your repo list and further Chrome updates will come to you automatically.

Usually whatever you download, goes to the "Downloads" folder in your home folder (unless you tell it to go somewhere else).

Ubuntu Software Center is where you want to install software. Personally, I absolutely HATE USC. I prefer just using Synaptic. USC is good if you don't know what you're looking for, where Synaptic is better when you know what you're looking for.

You shouldn't ever really need to "download" a program from the Internet. Just open up Ubuntu Software Center, and do a search for "Chromium". When the results come up you'll see the "Chromium Web Browser" Click that one, and click Install. USC will then download and install the browser for you. Once it says its done, just go to the dashboard, search for Chrome, and click the icon to start it.
