Troy Defense Carbine - $900

Just a heads up that if you are looking for a quality AR with a lot of features at a good price, try this:

http://www.troydefense.com/firearmsa...-5-56-carbine/

Exclusively at Dick's Sporting Goods on sale thru Sat. for $1000 but if you open an account with them, they take off 10%. Add in the $35 gift card for the 1000 reward points and you can buy a couple Troy magazines to go with it.

$900 is tough to beat with those features.

No experience with them. The one that comes with it is nice but a 10 rounder. They do sale 30 rounders in the store.

Word is, the billet lowers are too tight for PMAG's, though Troy and GI mags both work fine.

Don't waste your money at Dick's Sporting goods buying Troy mags. They are way over priced! Just go buy some P-Mags from magpul for $16.

Overpriced? How much do they charge at Dick's?
Troy mags at Primary Arms go for $12.49 each.

Untill I see some data on the rifles TROY is building I wouldn't do it. You could almost get a Colt/BCM for that money.

I'm not a fan of that configuration, but I do like the quality of the Troy accessories on my rifle.

$900 seems like a good deal for the rifle in the link.

Ugly as sin, but it grows on you. I have a YHM rifle with a Magpul stock on it and I kinda like the Troy BattleAxe stock better. I like the grip better too but it is all personal preference.

Yeah I wouldn't buy any other stuff from Dick's because it all seems overpriced. Troy makes good stuff so I have no reason to believe the carbine is anything less. Early reports seem to be +.

Q: Will any rails work on it? I checked Primary Arms and the Troy rails were sold out. Any suggestions on a sling mount? I'm going with a 2 point sling but rifle doesn't have a front attachment point so I need a sling mount that attacheds to a rail.

The tomahawk stock is not as durable as you may think , I broke that latch mechanism on one doing a clearance on some really crappy ammo.
The overall rifle looks to be very nice.

Buy it with their credit card you apply for and that is $720!

The TROY seems like a better deal compared to a plain jane Colt ($1097 w/ Rogers Super Stock) and BCM ($1099 w/ Gunfighter grip and charging handle) The only thing I see separating the TROY and Colt/BCM is proof of individually HP tested bolts and barrels and chrome lining. They claim individually MP tested bolts.

Barrels are CMV Might want to read up here on what barrel steel is "milspec" with Melonite coating. Getting a plain jane Colt/BCM will cost a lot more trying to dress it up over the cost of the TROY as is.

That and a metric crap ton of product testing.

Troy makes great tubes. I'm curious who makes their ARs.

There has been a lot of speculation on this, but no proof has ever been put forth. I got a chance to look one over, and I didn't have any problems with it other than I think the lower was billet. There have also been some reports that older (non Gen3) Pmags would not fit. Barring some entirely garbage company like DPMS making them, these represent an astounding deal. I don't see, however, Troy doing something like that.

lmao!

I just posted another thread about this deal, completely oblivious to this thread even though I did search (improperly, I guess).

I was pretty interested in this when I first heard about it because I thought it was a middy and that it had a F/A BCG, etc.

After doing some more research, it appears this comes with a 10 round magazine, and that many have claimed these don't freely drop PMAGs (and the Troy has given a bizarre answer about mags only need to drop free if 20% of the magazine is still full???). It's a carbine, not a middy (apparently), and it has a S/A BCG, along with a funky looking stock.

I'm not knocking this rifle at all, but this is a weird sort of offer that somehow exclusive to Dick's Sporting Goods, and I'm not full of confidence that these are put together with pride and joy by the elves in Massachusetts (that may be off base, but it's just a gut feeling).

Ordered mine today. I don't care about the Pmag issue, since I use USGI mags. As for the 10rd mag, I have plenty of other mags. And btw, it is a mid length.

+1

I like Troy rails and sights, but I'm not crazy about their stocks, grips, mags, ect.

I wonder who makes the barrel, upper, lower and BCG for Troy, though. Anyone know?

Do you have anything establishing it's a middy?

I'd greatly appreciate it. Everything I've seen in writing and heard from a DSG employee posting on ARF says carbine.

Thanks.

I had the counter guy hold it up next to a S&W carbine length model.

One of mt ARs is carbine, and one is mid length. I knew the Troy was mid length when I looked at it. The comparison was just to convince the counter guy.

I'm pretty sure it is a middy. Check Troy's site? Mine will not take a PMag but I only own three so they go with my YHM I have. You can take that 10rd mag apart, buy a spring for $4 and it's now a 30 rounder.

Don't know about durability but I also have the Magpul stock on my YHM and like the BattleAxe stock better. The grip from Troy feels better but all that is subjective anyway.

Happy shooting

I actually looked at this in person tonight.

The guy behind the counter was very helpful. I am not used to Dick's Sporting Goods so didn't know what to expect.

Overall, the rifle was decent, but the fit and finish could have been better, to be honest.

There was a lot of play in the front and rear sights, the stock didn't lock up as tight as say, my LMT, but otherwise it seemed decent.

There's also no mention of who makes what in terms of the BCG, barrel, etc.

For $770 OTD if you apply for their credit card (which you can cancel), it's a decent deal. The biggest issues for me is that it does not easily accept PMAGs, which makes me wonder if there'll be any feeding issues (aside from the fact it will obviously not drop them), and there was a bit too much play/looseness for a out of the box complete AR.

This is a weird time regarding ARs, though, when you can get a Colt 6920LE for a wee bit more than $900 (minus the rail and some other accessories the Troy had), or a S&W M&P15 for $650.

My son went and bought one at Dick's early this morning. Brought it over to show me this afternoon. It is a very nice rifle for the money. Couldn't build one with all the features for that price IMO. Yes it is a middy.

I paid just under $800 LEO price (after transfer/shipping etc) a couple years ago for my S&W MP15 OR and the Troy blows it out of the water. Sights are good, free float narrow hand guard (which I really like). Stock is real nice to use and it is lighter than my MP15 which surprised me. Handles real nice

This thing is a custom rifle for the price of a intro AR. If I didn't already have 6 or 7 ARs I would have jumped on this.
